Rockstar Planned Massive NPC Mechanics for GTA IV, But It Was Scrapped Due to Technical Issues
Grand Theft Auto VI, released by Rockstar Games in 2008, remains one of the series’ most beloved games for lots of fans and one of the most eagerly anticipated titles deserving of a remastered version or even a full-scale remake. At the time, the game marked a significant leap forward in the franchise’s development, switching to a new gaming engine, but it turns out that the developers had planned to make GTA IV even more detailed—particularly in terms of NPC design.
In a recent interview, former Rockstar Games technical lead Obbe Vermeij, as reported by GamesRadar+, revealed that the game’s producer, Leslie Benzies, wanted to recreate the lives of NPCs in GTA IV as realistically as possible—to the extent that they would have their own homes, daily routines, commutes to work, errands, and more. This would have made the game incredibly detailed, but according to Vermeij, the developers encountered a huge number of bugs, and technically, such a feature was extremely difficult to implement. Ultimately, the idea had to be scrapped. You can check out Obbe Vermeij’s more detailed comments below:
“There were so many bugs. I didn't like the idea of fully simulated NPCs because it felt like it didn't really matter that much. It wasn't really important that everyone had their own schedule and their own life.
I actually think that, psychologically, players are fine with NPCs being a little fake and shallow. I think what it comes down to is that realism is just not necessarily something to aim for in a game.”
It’s worth remembering that Grand Theft Auto IV was developed for consoles that were far less powerful at the time than they are now – the PlayStation 3 and Xbox 360 – and their technical specifications were likely another reason why many features couldn’t be implemented. We’ll probably see something similar in terms of realistic NPC behavior in GTA 6 – it has been reported on multiple occasions that Rockstar Games is working hard on this aspect, making the behavior of the inhabitants as close to reality as possible, where every action you take will influence their behavior.
As for GTA IV, rumors of a remastered version regularly surface on the internet, although Rockstar has given no indication whatsoever that it is working on an updated version of the game. Their main focus right now is Grand Theft Auto VI, which is set to be released on November 19 for PlayStation 5 and Xbox Series X/S. Later this month, Netflix will host a new presentation of the game, which, according to rumors, will have a series-style structure and consist of three separate episodes released at different times.
