Onimusha: Way of the Sword Tops Steam Charts – 62,000 Concurrent Players, 80% Positive Reviews on Launch Day

Capcom's long-awaited return to the Onimusha series is officially here. Onimusha: Way of the Sword launched today on Steam, PS5, Xbox Series X/S, and Nintendo Switch 2 the franchise's first new entry since 2006 and early numbers suggest both longtime fans and newcomers are showing up in force.

The game wasted no time making an impact. According to SteamDB, Onimusha: Way of the Sword is currently sitting at roughly 60,000 concurrent players, with its 24-hour peak reaching 62,822. Interestingly, the player count hovered around 40,000 for the first few hours after launch before climbing sharply starting around 9 AM. That surge has been enough to push the game to the very top of Steam's best-seller list, outpacing most of September's other releases — including The Blood of Dawnwalker, which launched just a day earlier.

The reception among players has been warm as well, with the game holding an 80% positive rating on Steam. That's a touch below the critical consensus, but a solid result for a release of this scale. Players are praising the combat system, the visuals, and a story that's simple but easy to follow.

The most common complaints center on regular enemy encounters feeling too easy leaving bosses to carry most of the challenge along with some grumbling about the English localization. A handful of reviews also point to a lack of enemy variety and recycled minibosses scattered throughout the open world.
