Miami Will Turn Into Vice City Before the Release of GTA 6

Most gamers have had November 19 circled on their calendars for a while now, the day GTA 6, the most anticipated game of the year and maybe the generation, finally launches on PlayStation 5 and Xbox Series X/S. As is well known, the story takes players to Vice City, modeled after Miami. And now, as the release date approaches, Miami itself is apparently starting to transform into Vice City, complete with themed decorations and billboards.

According to a new report from The Miamian, Miami District 2 Commissioner Damian Pardo plans to grant Rockstar permission to place billboards around the city tied to GTA 6's launch. The measure is expected to take effect September 10, with billboards up from October 15 through December 31. The resolution frames the move as a way to showcase Miami as an international hub for entertainment, technology, media, tourism, and the creative industries, with GTA 6's release seen as a further draw for public attention. Each banner is costing Rockstar $202,000, with the proceeds going toward developing the Upper Deck–Edward T. Graham Heritage Trail.

GTAVI marketing on billboards and city advertising placements seemingly begins on October 15th, at least for Miami.

However, not everyone's on board with the idea. Miami-Dade Commissioner Juan Carlos Bermudez and Miami-Dade Sheriff Rosie Cordero-Stutz have both publicly pushed back on the idea of turning Miami into Vice City, noting that early plans reportedly included transforming Miami International Airport and other real-world locations into their GTA 6 counterparts. They also argued that promoting a game built so heavily around violence with city billboards wasn't the best call.

Despite the pushback, the first GTA 6 billboards are still expected to show up in Miami come October, and similar campaigns will likely follow in other major cities worldwide. Last week's gameplay reveal from Rockstar seems to have kicked off an increasingly aggressive marketing push.
