How GTA 6 Is Reshaping the 2026 Game Release Calendar

Autumn is always considered the prime season for the release of major video games. It’s not just a lead-up to further promotion at events like The Game Awards and similar presentations; it’s also a combination of factors such as the holiday season, which drives higher sales, and the successful closing of the financial year.

The year 2026 also promises to be exciting for new video game releases this fall. This is not only because Grand Theft Auto VI—the most anticipated game of the past several years—is set to launch in November. On the contrary, thanks to this new Rockstar Games title, developers are likely speeding up their release schedules, and it's already clear that September and October are packed with a variety of game launches.

The highlight of last week was the series of gaming presentations—including State of Play, Summer Game Fest, Xbox Games Showcase, and Nintendo Direct. As expected, many highly anticipated titles received official release dates, and some will even launch on the same day, September 24th—namely Remedy’s Control Resonant and Screen Burn’s Silent Hill: Townfall. The very next day, Capcom will release the latest installment of Onimusha, titled Way of the Sword. Additionally, several other eagerly awaited games are set to come out in September, such as Marvel’s Wolverine (September 15), The Blood of Dawnwalker (September 3), Warhammer 40,000: Dawn of War IV (September 17), Halloween: The Game (September 8), and Hot Wheels: Infinite Rush—also on September 24—among others.

October is no longer as packed with major project releases, but it still features several big launches. Notably, Rayman Legends: Retold and Dynasty Warriors 3 Complete Edition Remastered arrive on October 1st, followed by Ace Combat 8: Wings of Thee on October 2nd. Other releases include Gears of War: E-Day and Star Wars: Galactic Racer on October 6th, Forever Ago on October 8th, Castlevania: Belmont’s Curse on October 15th, Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 4 on October 23rd, Phantom Blade Zero on October 29th, among others. Additionally, One More Level initially planned to release their new shooter, Valor Mortis, on September 24th but recently pushed the date back to October 13th.

You might wonder, what does this have to do with GTA 6? The thing is, besides GTA 6, only a handful of games are scheduled for release in November—and, with all due respect, none of them are major titles. We're talking about games like Godzilla: Destroy All Monsters Melee Remastered (November 3), Gothic 3 Classic (November 24), and, interestingly, Barbie Rewind, which is set to launch just a week before GTA 6 on November 12. This timing has stirred quite a bit of buzz among gamers. Moreover, it's worth noting that many developers have postponed their releases to 2027 because of GTA 6's launch. For instance, Crystal Dynamics and Playground Games have confirmed that Tomb Raider: Legacy of Atlantis and Fable will now be released in February next year.

It seems we are witnessing yet another example of how GTA 6 is reshaping the gaming industry—and the official marketing campaign hasn’t even kicked off yet. Rumor has it that it will launch this month. For now, you can also find out everything we know about GTA 6 so far - the story, gameplay, map, open world, platforms, and more.
