PS5 and Xbox Sales Jump a Third After the GTA 6 Netflix Video
Rockstar's GTA 6 Netflix deep dive drew 31.1 million viewers, and NielsenIQ then logged UK PS5 sales up 33% and Xbox Series up 34%.
One video did what price cuts have not. Consoles sold out at retailers worldwide, Nintendo picked up a lift it did not pay for, and Newzoo is already warning against reading a whole generation into a single week.
The Game Business reported the NielsenIQ figures, which cover the week after Grand Theft Auto VI: An Extended Look aired on Netflix. Almost 4 million people watched on livestreaming platforms, another 22 million on YouTube. In the UK, Sony's own store was left with one PS5 Pro model available to buy outright, and almost every third-party retailer ran out. Nintendo Switch 2 sales also rose by a third, though buyers there were probably moving ahead of the console's price increase rather than responding to Rockstar.
That spike lands on a bad year. UK console hardware sales were down 14.4% year on year by the end of July, dragged by a 32% fall for PS5, while Xbox Series S and X sales were up 3.1%. In the US, July was the worst month for console sales since 2020, when stock ran out during the pandemic.
Newzoo's Ronan Patrick puts the PS5 at 67% more expensive than at launch once inflation is counted, and Xbox at roughly double. He expects GTA 6 and Call of Duty to grow the install base without reshaping it.
"Not as high as it would have been... Nothing particularly massive."
— Ronan Patrick
Patrick's second point is the more useful one for publishers. Most player time goes to older games, and the closest precedent for a hardware squeeze is the 2020-2021 GPU shortage, when engagement and revenue held steady and spending moved into software instead.

I already own the PS5, so the queue outside the shops is not my story, and what I want from November is to see whether Vice City holds up after the launch noise fades.
Hardware scarcity may also change Rockstar's plans. VGC editor-in-chief Andy Robinson said on a recent podcast that the studio could bring GTA 6 on PC sooner than its usual pattern suggests, precisely because consoles are hard to buy right now. Robinson has no Rockstar sourcing and framed it as industry chatter. Tom Henderson previously pointed at autumn 2027, which matches how Rockstar has handled PC releases before, and IGN has argued the PC build is where the game's technical ceiling actually sits.
Console specs are settled enough to plan around. Rockstar North co-studio head Rob Nelson confirmed 30 FPS across every console, PS5 Pro included. Moore's Law is Dead claims the Pro will carry Enhanced status with PSSR handling 4K, which improves the image without lifting the frame cap. HipHopGamer has claimed 60 FPS on Pro, and that stays a rumor until Rockstar publishes specs. Sony used State of Play to reveal a GTA 6 DualSense pair in black and white at $85, with pre-orders opening on 10 September and shipping on 19 November alongside the game.
I know from Death Stranding and Euro Truck Simulator 2 that unbroken movement is what keeps me inside a world, so 30 FPS is the first number I will judge Vice City by.
Creators with demo access have filled in the rest. TGG's breakdown of side activities in GTA 6 covers gyms that build health and stamina, sleep quality, feeding attribute recovery, catch-and-release fishing modelled on Red Dead Redemption 2, hunting tied to Jason's story, and outings that double as dates. The same channel detailed five criminal profile states: Professional, Aggressive, Violent, Psycho, and Shattered, with Shattered permanent once reached. Jason and Lucia each carry a separate profile.
I expect that reputation system to matter more to me than any of the side content, because permanent consequence is what turns an open world into a story worth remembering.
Pre-orders back the demand. Sensor Tower puts them near 5 million, with roughly 90% on the $100 Ultimate Edition, ahead of the 19 November console release.
