Aspyr Teases More The Lord of the Rings Games Will Get Remastered Versions Soon
Following a round of rumors, last week Aspyr Media officially unveiled The Lord of the Rings: War in the North—Legacy Edition —an enhanced version of the original 2011 game—which is now available to all players on PC, PlayStation 5, Xbox Series X/S, Switch, and Switch 2. This was a very welcome—and for some, unexpected—gift, but as it turns out, this may be the first of many Middle-earth games to receive an updated version.
Shortly after the release of The Lord of the Rings: War in the North—Legacy Edition, Aspyr Media issued a press release about the game, in which it explicitly hinted that the company would be releasing even more remasters of the franchise's older games in the future; however, as yet, it has not been specified exactly which projects are being referred to. You can check out Aspyr’s official statement on this matter below:
“The Lord of the Rings: War in the North™ – Legacy Edition is licensed by Warner Bros. Interactive Entertainment and is the first The Lord of the Rings title released by Aspyr. Fans can look forward to even more classic releases by Aspyr from the beloved franchise in the future!”
Immediately following this announcement, players began a lively discussion about which The Lord of the Rings games should receive remasters. Most fans agree that The Lord of the Rings: The Third Age—one of the best RPGs set in the universe—should definitely be included. Additionally, many recall cult classic strategy games such as The Battle for Middle-earth I & II and The Lord of the Rings: Conquest, but at this stage, Aspyr has not confirmed which specific titles might be re-released.
As for The Lord of the Rings: War in the North—Legacy Edition, it takes place in parallel with The Lord of the Rings: The Fellowship of the Ring movie, but in the northern lands of Middle-earth. Players take on the roles of three completely different characters—Eradan (a Ranger), Farin (a Dwarf), and Andriel (an Elf)—to oppose Agandaûr, a servant of Sauron who is gathering an army in the region of Fornost Erain. The game received positive reviews at the time for its well-developed co-op mode, combat system, atmosphere, and significant expansion of the lore—and according to early reviews, the updated version is even better, as it includes a host of useful features, such as auto-save, 60 FPS support, an improved interface, and much more. It is also known that another game set in Middle-earth is currently in development—Warhorse Studios, the developers of the Kingdom Come: Deliverance franchise, are in charge of it. Not many details are available at the moment, but the developers have confirmed that it will be a narrative adventure RPG set in an open world.
The Lord of the Rings: War in the North—Legacy Edition is now available on PC, Xbox Series X/S, PlayStation 5, Switch, and Switch 2.
