Sony Still Has Not Decided Yet on a PlayStation 6 Release Date
Sony has not yet announced the official release date or details for their next-generation console, the PlayStation 6. Despite various leaks and rumors, a new official statement from the company indicates that even they are unsure when the new device will be released.
Not long ago, Sony CEO and President Hiroki Totoki spoke with investors, where he addressed the most pressing questions. As reported by MeriStation, one of Totoki's key statements concerns the potential release date for the PlayStation 6 and the company's ongoing uncertainty regarding when that might occur. The state of the RAM market continues to be one of the primary factors.
“Looking at the current circumstances, the memory price is also expected to be very high FY 2027, because there will still be a shortage of supply. So under that assumption, we must think carefully what we will do.
We have not yet decided on at what timing we will launch the new console, or at what prices, so we would like to really observe and follow the situation.”
Totoki also confirmed that Sony will continue to use AI tools in the development of their video games but clarified that artificial intelligence should be a tool for assistance, not a replacement for employees.
“When we think about further growth at Sony Group, AI is one of the most important themes for us to consider. AI is a powerful tool - but it is not a replacement for artists or creators. It is an amplifier of human imagination and a catalyst for new possibilities”
As for the PlayStation 6, according to the latest rumors, Sony may reduce the console's RAM from 30 GB to 24 GB and utilize a 128-bit memory bus instead of a 160-bit one. This move would allow the company to lower the cost of the next-generation console, saving approximately 60 dollars on the production of each unit.
It was also previously reported that Sony aims to achieve ray tracing at 60 FPS on PlayStation 6, thanks to the AMD RDNA 5 architecture, and plans to add full backward compatibility with PS4 and PS5. Earlier rumors also indicated that the console could potentially run games at 4K resolution at 120 FPS. Furthermore, Sony is rumored to be working on a new handheld console, Project Canis, which will cost approximately $500–700 and exceed the performance of the Nintendo Switch 2, Xbox Series S, and Xbox Ally X.
