The first HD-2D Final Fantasy gets a new trailer at State of Play, featuring Sephiroth

Square Enix used Sony's September 3 State of Play to show off more of Final Fantasy Resonance. The game arrives October 22, 2026 on PS5, Xbox Series X|S, both Switch models, and PC. If waiting until then sounds rough, there's good news: a demo covering the whole first chapter is live right now, and whatever progress you make carries over once the full game launches.

At its core, Resonance is a second life for Final Fantasy Brave Exvius, the mobile game Square Enix scrapped a while back except now it's a full HD-2D console RPG. You play as Rain, a knight of Gransheld, whose job is to track down the Crystals scattered across the world of Lapis before Veritas of the Dark gets his hands on them and, well, ends everything.

The trailer's biggest moment was Sephiroth stepping out of the flames in a CG cutscene and this time it's not a fake-out. The footage cuts straight into a 2D boss battle against him, so this is an actual fight players will get to have, not just a nod to longtime fans.

He's not the only face from Final Fantasy history showing up, either. Gilgamesh and Ultima Weapon were already confirmed as bosses, and a handful of "Vision" characters — Cloud, Tidus, and the Warrior of Light among them join your party for stretches of the story, each with their own moveset.

Combat sticks to the series' turn-based roots but adds some newer ideas on top, so it should feel familiar without being a straight throwback. The usual staples are all here too chocobos, airships, an updated job system and the whole thing is rendered in a pretty striking pixel-art style throughout its cutscenes.
