Final Fantasy VII Revelation Will Require Around 200GB and Get Two DLCs

Final Fantasy VII Revelation director Naoki Hamaguchi gave an extensive interview to VGC at Tokyo Game Show 2026, confirming the game's approximate size, revealing new details about story DLC, and explaining why the $500 exclusive edition likely won't make it to Western players.

Hamaguchi confirmed that boxed editions for PS5 and Xbox won't fit the full game on discs buyers will need to download part of the content separately. The final size is still being worked out, but it's expected to come in at around 200GB. The director acknowledged that the topic has sparked plenty of debate among fans, but said the team didn't want to compromise the game's quality for the sake of physical media limitations, and to some extent has to work around hardware constraints.

Despite the need for an extra download, Square Enix insisted on releasing a physical version Hamaguchi stressed that it was important for the team to offer players a physical product, even in an era when the future of discs remains uncertain. Speaking as a programmer, he also explained the practical advantage of a digital release: a disc release requires final certification checks three months before launch, whereas a digital-only version can be patched right up until release day, giving more flexibility in case of critical bugs. On Nintendo Switch 2, the game will weigh in at around 130GB thanks to heavier compression and lower-quality textures compared to the PS5, Xbox, and PC versions.

Hamaguchi officially confirmed two story DLCs one focused on Vincent, the other on Sephiroth. According to the director, they should be thought of similarly to the Intermission episode from Final Fantasy VII Remake Intergrade: both DLCs are meant to dig deeper into these characters' stories.

Hamaguchi has previously said he wants Revelation to have a definitive ending that won't be spoiled by additional content. That raises an obvious question do these DLCs take place before the main events of the game, or after them? The director declined to say, only promising that details would be revealed later.

Square Enix previously announced a lavish collector's edition of the Remake trilogy priced at $500, available only in Japan. Asked about a possible Western release, Hamaguchi said production timelines are too tight and the edition's run is limited the company simply can't produce enough units. When pressed further with "so will it come to the West?", the director jokingly pointed the journalist toward the PR representative standing nearby meaning there was no official "no," but no promises either.

After a pause in the conversation, Hamaguchi shared a detail that hadn't been revealed anywhere before: the piano minigame from Rebirth has been significantly expanded in Revelation and will now contain additional information about Tifa that players can learn through it. The director joked that he'd "definitely get in trouble" with PR for that comment.

Final Fantasy VII Revelation launches on April 8, 2027, for PS5, Xbox, Nintendo Switch 2, and PC.
