Silent Hill: Townfall Might Be Better Than Silent Hill 2 Remake and Silent Hill f

September has been packed with major releases, like Onimusha: Way of the Sword, The Blood of Dawnwalker, and Marvel's Wolverine, but there's still plenty on the horizon. One of the most intriguing is Silent Hill: Townfall, the new Konami spin-off, developed by Screen Burn.

Earlier entries in the franchise, including Silent Hill 2 Remake and last year's Silent Hill f, earned strong praise from both players and critics, and expectations for Townfall are similarly high. In a new Famitsu interview, series producer Motoi Okamoto claimed Silent Hill: Townfall has every chance not just to match those two games in quality but to surpass them. “Both Silent Hill 2 and f received very high praise, and their Metacritic scores were great. I have confidence that Townfall will achieve similarly high acclaim. I have enough confidence to feel that it might end up being the masterpiece, so I have extremely high expectations.

Right now, it might feel a bit subdued to some people, but hearing the reactions of those who played the hands-on demo, we feel it will be evaluated very highly.”

Whether Silent Hill: Townfall can actually pull that off remains to be seen. It's a tall order for Screen Burn, since both Silent Hill 2 Remake and Silent Hill f sit at a strong 86 on Metacritic. That said, early impressions suggest the game is shaping up to be another genuinely strong horror entry, with an atmosphere driven largely by its first-person perspective and a persistent sense of being hunted.

Konami has also confirmed it's working on several new Silent Hill titles, with the franchise reportedly looking to expand beyond its usual setting, something made possible largely by Silent Hill f's success, and Townfall's positive early reception should only reinforce that direction. There's also been talk the studio might be revisiting the long-troubled Silent Hill 5 concept, canceled multiple times over the past two decades. Meanwhile, Bloober Team, the studio behind Silent Hill 2 Remake, continues working on a remake of the original game.

Silent Hill: Townfall will release on September 24 for PC and PlayStation 5.
