Ed Boon Claims It’s Possible That Mortal Kombat Will Receive More Than 10 Movies In Future

Mortal Kombat II, the sequel to the 2021 film, is set to premiere this week. Unlike the original film, the sequel will feature a new lead character—Johnny Cage, played by Karl Urban—and will focus on the full-scale tournament for which the video game series is famous.

Recently, while promoting Mortal Kombat II, the franchise’s creator, Ed Boon, revealed in an interview with Game Informer UK that the upcoming film will feature plenty of Easter eggs and references the fans are sure to love, and a new excerpt from the interview reveals that Boon sees the potential for more than ten new films to be released, as you can check out below:

"There is a story, there are additional villains that we've introduced over the years that I think are absolutely up-for-grabs in terms of continuing doing films. I would love to see another one introducing, you know, Shinnok. There are quite a few additional villains and what's great about Mortal Kombat is when you die, you're just going to come back in the next movie. Don't mourn them, they'll be fine."

We already know that Mortal Kombat III is happening, as the script was reportedly finished this year by Jeremy Slater. According to GeekTyrant, the upcoming third installment may adapt the events of the Mortal Kombat 3 video game, where Shao Kahn is manipulating events and resurrects Queen Sindel to invade Earthrealm and unite it with Outworld. As a result, there are no tournaments like in the upcoming Mortal Kombat II—instead, pure chaos and countless fights.

Mortal Kombat films surely have the potential for more releases considering the franchise’s lore and the stories it can adapt. Besides the adaptation of various video games, like Mortal Kombat 4, Deadly Alliance, or Armageddon, there might be spin-offs dedicated to certain characters or groups—Lin Kuei, Shirai Ryu, Black Dragon, and more.

As for Mortal Kombat II, its cast includes Karl Urban, who plays Johnny Cage, Ludi Lin (Lui Kang), Jessica McNamee (Sonya Blade), Joe Taslim (Bi-Han/Noob Saibot), Hiroyuki Sanada (Hanzo Hasashi/Scorpion), Adeline Rudolph (Kitana), Tati Gabriele (Jade), Josh Lawson (Kano), Martyn Ford (Shao Kahn), Tadanobu Asano (Lord Raider), CJ Bloomfield (Baraka), Lewis Tan (Cole Young), and more. The premiere date is set for May 8.
