Mortal Kombat II Will Include Lots of Easter Eggs for Fans
The premiere of Mortal Kombat II—the sequel to the 2021 original film directed by Simon McQuoid—is set for next week. Based on what we’ve seen in the trailers, the film has every chance of surpassing its predecessor, not only because of the inclusion of Johnny Cage, played by Karl Urban, but also because of its focus on the tournament and brutal fights—the very things we love about the game series.
With the film’s premiere fast approaching, director Simon McQuoid and franchise creator Ed Boon recently spoke with Gamereactor UK, where they shared a few details about what audiences can expect from the movie. In particular, Ed Boon hinted the fans should prepare for a huge number of “easter eggs” and references—especially those planning to watch Mortal Kombat II in IMAX. More detailed information from Boon and McQuoid can be checked out below:
“Ed Boon:
“Simon did something really clever that - I shouldn't give it away but - if you see the IMAX version of the movie and you're a fan of the games, you will go crazy when you see what's in there. But littered throughout the film are a hundred Easter eggs that are in the game. I think a lot of people are going to watch the film multiple times. I bet you there's going to be a list somewhere on Twitter or something or like that. To me, that's such a fan service to people who are fans of the games.”
Simon McQuoid:
“It was just a constant process of looking at the decades of lore that Ed and his guys have created and just constantly mining that and seeing what we could use and seeing how we could fold it in and layer it into the film and the story. I think what we were trying to do was make Fatalities, and any even Easter eggs and camera moves, anything that was from the game, we wanted it to have an emotional impact, we wanted it to mean something beyond just, "oh, that looks cool". Those Fatalities arrive at certain points, very key story points and so we're always trying to give them some sort of amplification just so they resonate more for the audience watching the story.”
We also know that Mortal Kombat III is officially happening, with the script possibly being finished by screenwriter Jeremy Slater. According to GeekTyrant, the upcoming third installment may adapt the events of the Mortal Kombat 3 video game, where Shao Kahn is manipulating events and resurrects Queen Sindel to invade Earthrealm and unite it with Outworld. As a result, there are no tournaments like in the upcoming Mortal Kombat II—instead, pure chaos and countless fights.
The cast of Mortal Kombat II includes Karl Urban, who plays Johnny Cage, Ludi Lin (Lui Kang), Jessica McNamee (Sonya Blade), Joe Taslim (Bi-Han/Noob Saibot), Hiroyuki Sanada (Hanzo Hasashi/Scorpion), Adeline Rudolph (Kitana), Tati Gabriele (Jade), Josh Lawson (Kano), Martyn Ford (Shao Kahn), Tadanobu Asano (Lord Raider), CJ Bloomfield (Baraka), Lewis Tan (Cole Young), and more.
