Workbench, Mines, and Helicopters: New Cut Content from Ghost Recon Project OVR Revealed

Unfortunately, it seems that almost all the games currently in development at Ubisoft have faced some form of difficulty during production. One such title is the new Ghost Recon installment, codenamed Project OVR. Although the game has not yet been officially announced, some details about it have emerged—including features that have already been cut during development.

The development issues with the game are seemingly continuing, as Insider Gaming has shared a new exclusive report about features Ubisoft has recently cut from the new Ghost Recon game in order to accelerate the transition to the next phase of development. According to a source citing internal company documents, the following features have recently been removed from Project OVR:

  • Proximity mines that could be placed on the map.
  • Workbench: a deep workshop mechanic that would have let players create and modify weapons.
  • Helicopters: developers decided to cut these even earlier, as their inclusion was deemed too risky to implement before the deadline.

However, the source also adds that Ubisoft plans to add other features to Project OVR in the future, such as hostage rescue missions and a special device for suppressing enemy camps. The developers also have plans for additional features, but those will be evaluated after the project reaches the alpha stage. Specifically, this includes an in-game currency called Cryptel, NPC-performed executions of hostages, and enemy gunfire while vehicles are moving.

Nevertheless, this report makes it clear that the new Ghost Recon is far from being in the best shape. This is especially concerning given that, just last month, there were reports of yet another round of content cuts to Project OVR, affecting both major and minor features. It is also clear that the release date for Project OVR remains unknown at this stage.

However, Ubisoft has previously confirmed in its financial report that the studio plans to launch new Far Cry, Assassin's Creed, and Ghost Recon games by 2029. Ironically, development on Far Cry 7 and Assassin's Creed Codename Hexe—the very titles in question—is also proving difficult.

At the same time, there is good news for Ubisoft, as its latest release, Assassin's Creed Black Flag Resynced, sold 2 million copies within 24 hours of its launch on July 9. The game is now available on PC, Xbox Series X/S, and PlayStation 5.
