Over 250,000 Gamers Signed the Petition Against Sony Dropping Discs—and the Number Keeps Growing

At the beginning of July, Sony made an important announcement about the company's future that disappointed the majority of gamers. Specifically, the company confirmed that, starting in 2028, it will stop releasing video games on physical discs. However, it was later clarified that this change won't happen all at once, though the process is already underway and irreversible. Nevertheless, gamers aren't ready to give up, as they have even launched a petition addressed to Sony, urging the company to reconsider its decision.

It is highly unlikely that some of Sony’s representatives will respond to the petition; however, it is worth noting that it continues to gain popularity and more signatures. So far, more than 270,000 players worldwide have signed it, and some have also provided detailed written and video responses explaining why preserving games on physical discs is important. It is also worth mentioning that the petition's author, Jade Pearce, is a representative of the Canadian retailer PnP Games.

Previously, Bloomberg journalist Jason Schreier shared his personal opinion on why PlayStation decided to stop releasing games on discs. As he sees it, Sony's biggest mistake is that the company didn't offer players any alternatives—such as discounted prices on digital versions, improved refund policies, or a "share games" option. As a result, only Sony benefits from this decision, while players do not. It's also worth noting that, in response to Sony's move to discontinue physical game releases, a lot of PS Plus subscribers are calling for the cancellation of their subscriptions to "make their voices heard."

Meanwhile, former PlayStation CEO Shawn Layden recently revealed in an interview that Sony was already considering moving away from discs during his tenure, as digital sales account for 95% of the company's revenue. Earlier, he also criticized Sony for refusing to release its single-player titles on PC, stating that the company is missing out on reaching a wider audience.

In any case, this month has certainly been a complicated one for Sony in terms of community feedback. However, its position remains unshakable—the company has not made any announcements about reconsidering its decision to stop releasing games on discs, and it's unlikely that anything will change soon.
