Nintendo blocks a bunch of Switch 2 consoles over a server issue

Complaints started piling up from Nintendo Switch 2 owners this week. Some unknown error started locking people out of their consoles, and plenty of them had done nothing wrong.

Starting September 6, users on Reddit and other platforms began reporting bans with no clear cause. Owners saw error codes 2124-4508, 2124-4007, and 2181-4008, then lost access to Nintendo Switch Online and the eShop. Some couldn't get into multiplayer. Others couldn't redownload games they'd already bought.

Most people hit by the errors insisted they'd never pirated anything or touched a flash cart like MIG Switch. One story stood out. A user said his daughter's console got banned over alleged cartridge copying, even though he was sure she'd only played on licensed discs. The strangest part: they had four Switch 2 consoles at home, and only one got hit.

Other users have complained that Nintendo Support refuses to accept any proof that all the games were purchased with a valid license.

Same. My switch 2 got banned as well. I already contacted nintendo support earlier but they can't provide the specifics of why. My switch is not modded and my games I either buy from the eshop or have a physical cart with me. I already offered to provide proof if needed but they just repeated what they already said. Will try to contact again later. Very frustrating as I did not do anything to warrant this. They also told me I could just use my account on another console as only the console is banned. How would I feel safe buying another console if it can be banned out of nowhere? Not even giving option to dispute and provide proof.

Some owners later updated their posts. A number said the ban lifted after they contacted support, others said it just went away on reboot. Eventually Nintendo support admitted it was a server-side error.

Worth remembering: since May 2025, Nintendo's user agreement gives the company the right to render a console completely unusable if it detects hacking or piracy. So when this new wave of unexplained bans hit, the panic made sense. And there's a wrinkle the whole thing happened right before Nintendo Direct, scheduled for September 8.
