Guerrilla Games Is Working On a New Killzone Video Game
It’s been almost 13 years since the release of the latest installment in the Killzone series to date, Shadow Fall. As a PlayStation exclusive, the shooter series has a dedicated fan base, and Killzone 2, released in 2009, is widely considered one of the standout shooters of that generation and one of the best PlayStation exclusives ever released. Given how long players have been waiting, it seems this latest news might make them happy.
A new exclusive MP1st report reveals that Guerrilla Games, the series’ developers, have begun work on a new Killzone project, which is currently in the very early stages. The studio is also collaborating with third-party developers to make a remaster or remake of one of the older games—likely the first Killzone, released in 2004. The report also states that Guerrilla had planned to start development on the new game earlier but is currently busy working on the Horizon Hunter’s Gathering reboot, which has received negative reviews. MP1st also confirms that after the release of Killzone, the developers plan to switch to the third installment of Horizon—but given the studio’s constantly changing plans, this is still a very early assumption.
REPORT: A new Killzone is claimed or be in very early stages of production
- Guerrilla Games working with an external (not PlayStation first-party) studio on a Killzone remaster/remake
- Not specified which game being worked on (quite likely the first one)
- Killzone was supposed to be their next focus after Horizon Hunter’s Gathering
- Horizon 3 comes after
Given that the new Killzone is still in the early stages of development and Guerrilla Games is currently working on Horizon: Hunter’s Gathering, it’s possible that the new shooter is being developed with the PlayStation 6 in mind, though this is merely speculation. It was also revealed last year that People Can Fly (Painkiller, Bulletstorm) entered into a partnership with Sony to co-develop a game known as Project Delta—and even then, rumors about a new Killzone began to circulate. It’s possible that the studio is indeed involved in the development.
Speaking of Horizon Hunters Gathering, Bloomberg recently reported that PlayStation has rebooted development of the game after it received overwhelmingly negative feedback during several early tests. The game is reportedly shifting from a live-service concept to a more traditional co-op action title. The outlet adds that the developers have a deadline of December of this year; otherwise, Hunter's Gathering might be canceled entirely.
Jason Schreier also added that the third full-fledged installment of Horizon is still a long way off, which confirms the aforementioned MP1st report. It was previously reported that the new game is already in closed beta testing at Guerrilla Games and is banking on “more of the same”—refining the mechanics but without significant variety or any new ideas. This information was shared on the Last Stand Media YouTube channel’s podcast.
