GTA 6 Will Amaze Players with the Density of the Game's Foliage
Grand Theft Auto VI represents a significant leap forward in terms of graphics compared to Rockstar Games' previous title, Red Dead Redemption 2, which was released in 2018. Although the game still looks incredible and showcases a massive scale, it seems that GTA 6 will take an even bigger step forward in this direction.
After all, this isn't surprising, since the game is being developed for more powerful consoles (the PS5 and Xbox Series X/S), so it's obvious that the game will feature improved graphics. However, according to a recent study conducted by Reddit user Temporary-Cicada-392 on the foliage density in GTA 6, only at one particular location in the game will it be four times bigger than Guarma in Red Dead Redemption 2, as it features more than 14,000 individually placed 3D trees. You can check out more information from the Reddit user himself below:
"So I actually went ahead and counted the trees to get a real metric on the map density rn
Basically i took the uncompressed png from the mapping discord and dropped it into photoshop. I set up a custom grid overlay dividing the whole image into small squares so i wouldn't double count anything or lose my place. I used the photoshop count tool which just drops a little yellow dot and tallies a number every time you click.
For the islands in the front and the big ones connected by the main highway i manually clicked every single tree crown. if u zoom in 500% u can actually see the ambient occlusion separating each tree because of the sun angle, so they are definitely individual 3d models and not just flat texture blobs. Just getting through that dense jungle area right under the plane and near the bridge pylons took like four hours.
When i got to the far left islands and the distant shore near the vice city skyline the LODs get too aggressive and the rendering just turns into a solid green mush. Obviously cant click individual trees there. So for that part i took a dense area in the mid-ground that I already counted, measured the pixel dimensions of it, and then used the color range selection tool to highlight all the matching green pixels on the distant islands. I just calculated the total surface area of that green color and used the density from the mid-ground chunk to multiply it out.
Total count ended up being 14,287. give or take maybe a couple hundred for the background math.
If u compare this volume to the guarma screenshots from rdr2 the RAGE engine is pushing at least 4x the foliage density here, which is crazy."
Grand Theft Auto VI will likely feature one of the largest and most detailed game maps in history, and this item is just one of many examples illustrating how hard Rockstar Games has worked on its RAGE game engine and how much it has improved since Red Dead Redemption 2. It seems there may be some truth to the recent comments made by the studio’s former developer, Rob Carr, suggesting that the company might be building its own game engine from scratch for GTA 6.
