Rockstar Games May Have Completely Overhauled Their Engine for GTA 6

Starting with Grand Theft Auto IV, Rockstar Games began using its own game engine—RAGE. We’ve seen it gradually improve in the studio’s subsequent projects, such as Red Dead Redemption, Grand Theft Auto V, and Red Dead Redemption 2, and players are expecting the developers to take the game engine to a whole new, unprecedented level in the upcoming Grand Theft Auto VI.

The graphics in GTA 6 look insane based on two trailers revealed by Rockstar Games, and they make 2013’s Grand Theft Auto V look like a PlayStation 2 game. There is also an opinion that Rockstar Games could have rebuilt their RAGE engine “from scratch” during the development of GTA 6. It was revealed by former Rockstar Games developer Rob Carr, who worked as an audio designer for multiple Rockstar Games installments. He also stated it could be the reason why the development of Grand Theft Auto VI is taking so long, as you can check out below:

"I know nothing about it, other than the fact that they probably will have – given the time frame of how long it's taken them to get to this stage – they've probably rebuilt the entirety of the Rage Engine. That's the only thing I can say with real genuine confidence.

I'll be amazed if they didn't because the architecture of technology has advanced significantly since GTA 5, which again, easy to forget, that was three generations ago. That was the last one to be released on 360 and PS3.”

The official marketing campaign of Grand Theft Auto VI is confirmed to start this summer, while Rockstar Games is also organizing multiple tests this month in India and the UK. Grand Theft Auto VI is not mentioned there, but the gamers are confident these tests are definitely related to the game’s upcoming release in November.
