id Software Addressed Fans After Massive Layoffs; Studio May Already Be Developing a New Doom Title

id Software, the developer best known for the Doom series, was one of the many gaming studios most affected by Microsoft's restructuring this week. According to updated numbers, 136 employees were laid off from the studio—nearly three times more than initially reported. There were concerns that the company might not recover from such changes; however, id Software has now issued a statement for the first time in several days since the layoffs, giving fans some positive updates.

On its social media, id Software addressed fans to thank them for their support and to reassure them that the recent wave of layoffs has not affected the company's plans. The studio confirmed it will continue working on upcoming projects; according to the statement, the current team size is roughly the same as it was when the studio was working on Doom (2016). You can check out more details from id Software's official statement below:

“Thank you all for the support this week.

While our studio was impacted, those changes were spread across teams. We still have the crew we need to build the games and tech we’re known for. The team today is about the same size we were when making DOOM (2016). We have always had a flat studio where everyone is a maker, and we will remain true to that philosophy moving forward.

We are focused on support each other and the team members impacted. We’re going to keep building the great games and tech that have defined us for the past 35 years, and we’re looking forward to seeing you at QuakeCon this August.”

Shortly after id Software's announcement, The Verge's Tom Warren revealed that the studio is already working on a new Doom video game, which is currently in the early stages of development. This could be further confirmation that the company will continue its work despite the significant layoffs reported earlier.

“while the id layoffs have been deep, I understand the changes haven’t turned id into a support studio. Instead, they’re now in the early stages of a new Doom game”

It is also worth remembering that following the updated information about layoffs within id Software, it was reported that the studio had been working on several projects —including a new installment of Perfect Dark, a multiplayer game set in the Doom universe, as well as two new IPs: a John Wick-inspired game codenamed Fury, and a sci-fi western featuring robots. Despite early speculation that all these projects might be canceled, now that id Software has confirmed it will continue to operate, there is hope that these games will eventually see the light of day, although their development will likely take significantly more time.

Speaking of Doom, the franchise's latest entry, Doom: The Dark Ages, recently received a new expansion titled Revelations. It has received high ratings on Steam; players praise it for its dynamic gameplay, well-chosen soundtrack, and engaging story, which reveals the life of the Doom Slayer from a more human perspective.
