The Legend of Zelda 40th Anniversary Direct: Ocarina Remake, Movie Title, and a Special Edition Switch 2

Nintendo used the Legend of Zelda 40th Anniversary Direct on September 8 to date the Ocarina of Time remake, name the live-action movie and confirm a Zelda Switch 2.

The show ran as a pre-show to the full Nintendo Direct, and it held four announcements: a November 5 date for the remake, an October 29 date for a special edition console and Pro Controller, the title of the Wes Ball movie, and a concert series. The whole broadcast is up on Nintendo of America's YouTube channel.

Ocarina of Time Remake Release Date Confirmed

Ocarina of Time Remake release date is November 5, and the trailer that carried it was the first real look at the game in motion. Link jumps on a button, the camera moves freely, and combat works the way it did on N64. Nintendo showed a dungeon inside the Great Deku Tree, so the early structure of the game is intact.

The ocarina itself now takes voice input through the Switch 2 microphone. Players hum a song instead of entering it on the C buttons, which is how a generation learned Saria's Song as a finger pattern rather than as music. Nintendo will also sell a physical ocarina accessory.

The rest of the changes clean up a control scheme from 1998. There is a dash, item switching no longer requires a trip to the pause menu, and aiming runs on motion controls. A menu screen called Threads of Time works as a quest log and as a woven record of what a player has done, laid out like a tapestry.

Hyrule stays close to the map people memorized. Regions are still separate areas with a loading screen between them, rather than the single open field of Breath of the Wild and Tears of the Kingdom. Nintendo did tease extra space in Castle Town, where a few shops hold minigames.

Nintendo first showed the remake in June 2026 as the closing announcement of that month's Direct, after months of insider leaks, with a denser 3D style that looks unlike the painted worlds of the Switch era. It stays a Switch 2 exclusive. November 5 also puts it in the same month as Grand Theft Auto 6, and Nintendo is one of the few publishers willing to put a flagship in that window.

A store page sat on the Australian Nintendo Store for a couple of hours before the Direct, listing the digital version at $94.95 AUD and the physical one at $109.95 AUD, which converts to roughly $59.99 and $69.99 in the US. That page never reached the eShop front end and disappeared within hours.

Special Edition Switch 2 Console Revealed

The Special Edition Switch 2 Console arrives on October 29, three weeks after the remake. Product photos had already leaked, and the Direct confirmed them. A golden Triforce sits on one side of the dock, the console ships with black and teal Joy-Con carrying Triforce patterns, and both the console and the dock wear the 40th anniversary logo with its small NES-era Link icon.

The matching Pro Controller uses the same black and teal base with a gold Triforce in the centre and gold shoulder buttons and triggers. Nintendo did not give a price for either item during the show.

I have been putting off a Switch 2 for a year, and an October 29 console with a November 5 Zelda on it settles the question. I think the remake is the game I would load first, ahead of everything else on my list.

The Legend of Zelda Movie Title Revealed

Shigeru Miyamoto handled the movie segment and confirmed the title: The Legend of Zelda. There is no subtitle, and Miyamoto said the reason becomes clear once people watch it. The story is original, built from ideas and characters across the series rather than adapted from one game, so nobody should expect a scene-for-scene Ocarina of Time.

Wes Ball, who directed the Maze Runner films and Kingdom of the Planet of the Apes, is behind the camera. Miyamoto is co-producing with Avi Arad. Filming wrapped last winter in New Zealand, which now stands in for Hyrule, and the film opens on April 30, 2027. Nintendo showed no footage, which was the one gap in a show built for an anniversary.

Zelda 40th Anniversary Concerts Announced

Zelda turned 40 this year, counting from the Famicom original in 1986, and Ocarina of Time followed in 1998 as the first 3D entry. The concert series starts in Japan and then travels to North America, Europe and Australia. Nintendo gave no venues or dates for the international legs.

LEGO Ocarina of Time Set Revealed

LEGO used the Direct to show The Legend of Zelda: Ocarina of Time – Link & Epona, a 1,750-piece display model aimed at adult builders and dated for spring 2027. The build puts adult Link on a rearing Epona with the Master Sword and the Hylian Shield in hand, and it ships without minifigures, so this is the first time LEGO has rendered Link at a larger scale. It follows The Final Battle set from earlier this year, a 1,000-plus-piece kit with Link, Zelda and Ganondorf minifigures and a larger Ganon build. Spring 2027 puts it five months behind the remake rather than alongside it.

Young Link and Young Zelda Amiibo Announced

Nintendo is adding two amiibo to the Zelda line, Young Link and Young Zelda, both modelled on the remake's designs and both sold separately. Link sits on a stump with Navi perched on his outstretched hand, and Zelda sits on a stone bench holding the ocarina itself. Scanning either one in the remake unlocks a mask for Link to wear, and the masks copy the polygonal N64 faces of the two characters. Neither figure ships with the game: Nintendo listed them for 2027 with no month and no price, which puts them months behind the November 5 launch. Zelda amiibo have gone out of stock fast in the past, so the gap between the game and the figures matters more than it sounds.

From September 6, Switch 2 owners reported bans they could not explain, with error codes 2124-4508, 2124-4007 and 2181-4008 cutting them off from Nintendo Switch Online and the eShop. Nintendo blocks consoles for piracy under the user agreement it introduced in May 2025, so the wave caused real panic before support admitted a server-side error.
