God of War Laufey Takes Place Alongside God of War (2018) and God of War: Ragnarok

At the State of Play show, which took place on June 2, several long-awaited projects were announced, one of which is undoubtedly the new installment of God of War. Rumors were confirmed: Santa Monica Studio is indeed working on a spin-off about Faye titled God of War Laufey.

The developers showed more than 20 minutes of God of War Laufey gameplay, featuring retrospective footage from God of War (2018), where Kratos and Atreus cremate Faye. Then, the action instantly transports the character to Everywhen—the transcendent afterlife realm of the gods, which raised questions among fans regarding the timeline and the setting of the game.

Early rumors about the project suggested that God of War Laufey would be a prequel to the main game, but in a recent interview published immediately after the gameplay reveal, Santa Monica Studio creative director Cory Barlog confirmed God of War Laufey is not a prequel and also teased how the game fits into the timeline, as you can check out below:

“This is not a prequel. This is a continuation of the timeline right at the beginning of God of War 2018.

Everything that we’re doing inside of this game, running in parallel to the timeline of 2018 and Ragnarok, also has direct connections to everything.”

As we remember from the game showcase at State of Play, we start playing as Faye almost immediately after the cremation scene, which is where God of War (2018) begins. This provides a basis to suggest that the events of the game really take place simultaneously with the original game, but at the same time, a technique such as time compression might be used here - her journey to Everywhen may take fractions of a second, but in reality, a significant time jump could occur.

A lot of things regarding the timeline of God of War: Laufey still raise questions, as does what kind of place Everywhen is, where the events of the game take place. The gameplay of the game showed that various divine beings can be encountered there, since Faye crosses paths with the Ancient Egyptian goddess Sekhmet and the Mongol/Tibetan deity Begtse. Following this logic, Baldur, the main villain of God of War (2018), could very well appear in the game, considering that in the original he is looking for Faye.

Speaking of Cory Barlog, he also revealed that the decision to make Faye the main character of the new God of War installment would significantly expand the franchise's lore and show her from a new perspective.
