World of Warcraft Is Getting Official Controller Support

Blizzard dropped another surprise at BlizzCon 2026. World of Warcraft is finally getting official gamepad support, and the first public tests are running right now on the convention's show floor.

The feature is live on the World of Warcraft: Forever demo stations, the newly announced Classic+ expansion. Right now the gamepad only works on the "Skyborne 1-10" content, the starting zone for the new Skyborne race. The dungeon demo doesn't support it yet.

The game detects a controller automatically. Press any button on the gamepad while standing in the Skyborne starting zone, and the interface switches over to controller mode right away.

Judging by the booth signage, the control scheme follows a standard Xbox layout:

  • Left and right sticks handle movement and camera
  • D-pad triggers spells
  • Y/B/A/X buttons cover spell use, interaction, and jumping
  • Bumpers and triggers (LB/RB, LT/RT) handle targeting and switching skill panels
  • A separate button opens the gamepad menu

A notice at the booth also warns visitors: "This experience is currently in an alpha state, and the team is looking for feedback as we continue to make improvements." So this is still an early, rough build.

After the opening ceremony, the dev team confirmed official controller support is planned for the full release of World of Warcraft: Forever, not just a one-off show floor demo. They're actively working to polish it before launch.

Interestingly, the question came up for "regular" retail WoW too. Developers from the Midnight team fielded questions about official controller support during interviews at the show. No concrete plans yet, but they gave fans the classic "never say never," leaving the door open for the future.

WoW has never had official plug-and-play gamepad support. Players who wanted to use a controller had to rely on third-party solutions like the ConsolePort addon or programs like Xpadder. Native support is a meaningful step for accessibility, especially given how popular handheld PCs like the Steam Deck and ROG Ally have gotten.

As a reminder, World of Warcraft: Forever launches November 4, 2026. Blizzard also announced a new expansion for the current retail version of WoW and a new campaign for Warcraft III at the same event.
