StarCraft: Everything Known from BlizzCon

At its BlizzCon presentation on September 12, Blizzard finally confirmed numerous rumors about the new StarCraft title, as the new game is subtitled Dominion. The franchise is also making a major genre shift, moving away from real-time strategy toward a full shooter with an open world.

Despite a confirmed release window, still years out, details on StarCraft: Dominion remain limited. Here's everything currently known about the new installment.

StarCraft: Dominion - Plot Details

The story is arguably the biggest mystery right now. Blizzard has confirmed the events of StarCraft: Dominion take place 70 years after StarCraft II: Legacy of the Void, suggesting a focus on the Terran Dominion, how the empire has evolved, and the challenges facing its people this time around. The protagonist is a recruit named Holt, and the game's brief synopsis frames the story around Dominion's citizens answering the call to defend humanity in its darkest hour. Judging by the debut trailer, brutal combat looks set to be central to the experience, and the genre shift might actually suit that focus well.

StarCraft: Dominion - Gameplay Details

The gameplay aspect of StarCraft: Dominion itself is just as intriguing. With Dan Hay, who previously worked on the Far Cry series, leading development, it's no surprise the game is shaping up as an open-world shooter. A first-person perspective seems like a reasonable guess, though that's unconfirmed. Early reports also point to a co-op mode and Unreal Engine 5 as the game's foundation, though it won't be a direct Destiny competitor. Given how co-op was used in the Far Cry games, it wouldn't be surprising to see it in StarCraft: Dominion as well. Either way, Blizzard hasn't revealed much more beyond that for now.

StarCraft: Dominion – Release Date

Alongside the announcement, Blizzard also confirmed a 2030 release, which caught fans a bit off guard, less because of the wait itself and more because of just how far out that date is being locked in. Dan Hay addressed this in an interview, saying fans have waited long enough and deserve concrete updates. He added that development has been underway for a while now, and the studio feels confident about hitting that release window. Platforms haven't been announced yet.
