New StarCraft Game Might Be a Co-Op Shooter, But Not Destiny-Like

Reports continue to surface that the new StarCraft game will be announced next week at BlizzCon. Meanwhile, fans have begun scouring for details about the upcoming project, and it appears we can already discuss the game’s presumed genre and features.

It’s hard not to notice that the official StarCraft website is literally flickering and periodically displaying the game’s interface, which could indicate an upcoming announcement. Meanwhile, some fans have started digging into the site’s code and found several hidden messages. These references include the year 2575—that is, after the events of StarCraft II—as well as Theta Squadron, the Aokara lunar complex, and the planet Roxara, which is where they’re headed. Reddit users have concluded that the new StarCraft may take place in an alternate timeline and the game will be a co-op shooter. These assumptions have recently been corroborated by some insiders.

For instance, on the recent Xbox Two Podcast, Windows Central editor Jez Corden shared his predictions for BlizzCon. From what he heard, the new StarCraft game will be a co-op shooter with cross-play support. Furthermore, the game will not be an Xbox exclusive; it will also be released on PlayStation 5 and possibly Switch 2. Meanwhile, Bloomberg journalist Jason Schreier stated the new StarCraft game will not resemble Destiny.

There have also been earlier rumors that Nexon is allegedly in talks to acquire the rights to StarCraft, after which they would begin full-scale development of the franchise's third installment. However, Microsoft and Blizzard have not yet made any statements, including ones about a new game in the franchise. Previous rumors suggested that former Far Cry developer Dan Hay is reportedly leading the development of a new StarCraft title, which is also featuring Unreal Engine 5 and an open world. In any case, it seems we’ll find out all the details next week at BlizzCon.
