Diablo 5: Every Detail Revealed at BlizzCon 2026

Diablo turns 30 this year, and Blizzard picked that exact anniversary to drop the franchise's biggest surprise in years. Fans walked in expecting another Diablo 4 DLC announcement. Instead, the company revealed a full fifth entry and gave it a rough release window. Right after the reveal, a panel called "Forging the Next Era" dug into gameplay, classes, and every confirmed Diablo 5 detail, plus what's waiting for Diablo 4 in the meantime.

Diablo 5 Release Date

Blizzard confirmed the Diablo 5 release date target in the first official teaser: spring 2029. The exact month is still unknown. And given Diablo 4's own track record of slipping deadlines, more than once, before it finally shipped, there's a real chance this window shifts too.

Diablo 5 Gameplay, Classes, and Other Details

One message ran through the whole panel: Diablo 5 is Blizzard's answer to how fans reacted to Diablo 4, and a tribute to Diablo 2 at the same time. It shows in almost every detail the team shared. They clearly read the community feedback and are trying to pull the best pieces from earlier games into one game. One developer put the new tone bluntly on stage, describing a world where Sanctuary has been destroyed and Diablo has already won, a far cry from the hopeful, campfire-lit framing of past entries in the series.

Setting and story

Diablo 5 picks up a hundred years after Diablo 4, in a Sanctuary that's already fallen. Diablo isn't waiting at the end this time as a final boss. Like Mephisto in Diablo 4, he's a full character shaping the story from the opening minutes. Much of the campaign centers on restoring Westmarch, the series' most iconic location, out of its ruined, hell-twisted state.

Classes

Three are confirmed for launch. Two returning favorites, the Demon Hunter and the Monk, plus a brand-new class called the Plague Knight. Blizzard is also promising more Diablo 5 classes at launch than every previous Diablo game combined. Big claim to make three years out, and the kind of promise that's easy to quietly scale back if development runs long.

World generation

Procedural generation is back, and this time it covers both dungeons and the open world. Clear a region, come back later, and it won't look the same. Diablo 4's world, by comparison, always felt a bit too fixed in place.

Loot

Here's where the Diablo 2 throwback goes deepest. A grid-based inventory, gear stat requirements, Runewords, and set items are all returning, alongside new multi-slot items meant to balance easy pickup with deep build crafting.

Development approach

Blizzard says it's building Diablo 5 with the community from this early stage, instead of disappearing for years and showing up with a finished game that leaves no room to change course. Diablo 4's endgame and itemization took a beating from players after launch. This is the studio's way of signaling it's actually listening now.

The opening ceremony itself kept things brief: a short cinematic Diablo 5 teaser, no gameplay, no engine footage. Everything above came out of the panel that followed later the same day.

Will Diablo 4 Continue to Get Updates Before and After Diablo 5?

Yes, just not through story expansions. Diablo game director Brent Gibson confirmed at BlizzCon that no new expansions are currently planned for Diablo 4. Whatever's left of the story is moving into future seasons instead.

That's not the same as walking away from the game. Gibson brought up Diablo 2: Resurrected, which got a new class this year, as proof Blizzard sticks with older entries in the franchise long after release. Diablo 4 support, he said, continues "for a very long time," with seasons slowly building toward the ruined world Diablo 5 opens in.

Diablo 4 isn't slowing down anywhere else either. It's heading to Nintendo Switch 2, a platform it's never had before, landing right around the same window as the Diablo 5 announcement.

What becomes of Diablo 4 once Diablo 5 actually launches in 2029 is still up in the air. Gibson drew a loose comparison to Diablo 3, which keeps getting seasonal content years after Diablo 4 came out, mostly by cycling through old fan-favorite seasons rather than adding new story. Whether Diablo 4 follows the same pattern is something Blizzard says will come down to player feedback over the next few years.

Diablo 5 wasn't the only headline out of the BlizzCon 2026 opening ceremony, either. The night also delivered a new StarCraft, World of Warcraft: Forever, a Heroes of the Storm update, and a handful of other Blizzard announcements.
