Players Compare Early Reveals of Diablo V and StarCraft: Dominion to Bethesda’s Announcements

During the BlizzCon presentation on September 12, Blizzard made several major announcements regarding its flagship game franchises. Perhaps the most notable were the reveals of Diablo V and a new StarCraft title called Dominion. Both projects already have confirmed release dates, but that doesn’t mean they’re coming out anytime soon.

Specifically, it was revealed that the new, fifth installment of Diablo will not be released until 2029, and StarCraft: Dominion will follow a year later. As a result, players have reacted with mixed feelings to this move by Blizzard—revealing their games so early—noting the similarity to Bethesda Game Studios and the announcement of The Elder Scrolls VI, which was first shown at E3 2018 and still doesn’t even have an approximate release window. In the context of Diablo V, the discussion has centered particularly on Diablo IV, which continues to receive regular updates. However, Blizzard has already clarified the situation, confirming the fourth installment will not receive story expansions, despite the upcoming addition of the Amazon class.

But the release date for StarCraft: Dominion—confirmed only as 2030— sparked even more discussion on Reddit. Not only are some fans unhappy the game will switch genres and might end up resembling Far Cry more—since development is led by Dan Hay, who previously worked on that series—but they also don’t understand why the release date was announced so early, given there’s always a chance it could be delayed. Nevertheless, in a recent interview, Hay expressed confidence StarCraft: Dominion will be released on schedule and confirmed work on the project has been underway for quite some time.
