Marvel’s Spider-Man 2 Brought in Revenue of $1.2 Billion: 35% of These Were Physical Copies

Marvel's Wolverine, the new PlayStation 5-exclusive from Insomniac, launches in just a couple of days. Sony is banking on it to be another financial hit, especially given how well Marvel's Spider-Man 2 performed. A new report now breaks down exactly how much that game earned and just how big a role physical copies played in those numbers.

Rhys Elliott of Alinea Analytics shared updated figures on Marvel's Spider-Man 2's performance, putting its gross revenue at over $1.2 billion, well ahead of other titles on the list: Ghost of Yotei ($400 million), Astro Bot ($275 million), Helldivers II ($235 million), Stellar Blade ($185 million), Rise of the Ronin ($152 million), and Death Stranding 2: On the Beach ($129 million). Physical copies made up 35% of those sales. According to Elliott, physical releases are less profitable for Sony overall, which helps explain the company's push toward going fully digital starting in 2028.

It will be interesting to see how Marvel's Wolverine stacks up here. One early report suggested the game needs to sell at least 6 million copies in its first year to hit Sony's targets; otherwise, it will be a risk being seen as a financial disappointment, potentially putting future Marvel projects by Insomniac at risk too.

Adding to the pressure, Marvel's Wolverine has become the lowest-rated PlayStation first-party release in recent memory. Its Metacritic score isn't terrible at 78, with only Concord ranking lower. Critics have generally praised the combat system, emotional storytelling, and linear structure, though many felt the game lacked ambition and the gameplay grew repetitive.
