Remedy’s CEO Claims Control and Alan Wake Sales Should Have Been Higher
Over the past few years, Remedy studio has released two high-quality AAA projects - the original Control and the long-awaited sequel to Alan Wake—but according to the new CEO of Remedy, in one aspect the games could have been better - sales.
Jean-Charles Gaudechon, the new CEO of Remedy Entertainment, has spoken with The Game Business, in which he claimed that the sales of the Control and Alan Wake game series, in his opinion, deserve to be higher, and he hopes that the studio's partnership with Annapurna, who are working on various adaptations of the game series, will be able to contribute to this. The highlights from his interview you can check out below:
“Remedy is already one of the biggest game authors, with very strong signature products. Now after seeing it from the inside, there’s so much more we can give in terms of super strong authored, creative, crazy stories and gameplay. Honestly, we haven’t achieved half of the potential in terms of the products that we make.
But as franchises Control, Alan Wake, etcetera, could give a lot more. There’s a vision on thinking bigger for some of these IPs, which need to find its audience much, much further than the current audience. It’s super exciting. We need to think more about how we are approaching our IPs as a franchise. How do we grow the community?
Annapurna goes into making our games, our franchises shine further and reach an audience that doesn’t exist today. It’s a pity, I think Alan Wake should have sold more. Control should have sold more.
To me, that’s one of the first things we need to fix, even before trying to make more games to a certain extent. First of all, maximize the potential of the ones we have, because they’re incredible. And cross-media is going to help us do that.”
Recently, Remedy released a new financial report, which confirms that the original Control game sold 6 million copies since its release in 2019. As for Alan Wake's sales, the first part sold around 4.5 million copies, including the remaster released in 2021. The second installment became Remedy's fastest-selling game, and by 2025, it is estimated that its sales surpassed 2 million copies. It is also worth noting that on PC the game was released exclusively on the Epic Games Store, and the absence of the game on Steam could have affected its potential sales.
The next project from Remedy, Control Resonant, will become the studio's largest project, with its release scheduled for 2026. The game will be released on PC, Xbox Series X/S, and PlayStation 5. Moreover, the upcoming Max Payne 1 & 2 remakes are now in full production, as well as the studio working on a new title, which is now at the stage of concept looking.
