Mission from GTA 4 Secretly Inspired Mechanic for Grand Theft Auto V and Grand Theft Auto VI
One of the main features of the upcoming Grand Theft Auto VI will be the possibility to play two different characters—Jason Duval and Lucia Caminos. Just like in the previous installment, Grand Theft Auto V, the players will be able to switch the character at any moment during the gameplay, and this feature is also expected to play a major role in the storyline of Grand Theft Auto VI.
As we remember, Rockstar Games has started to make multiple protagonists in Grand Theft Auto games since 2013, when the fifth title was released on PlayStation 3 and Xbox 360. Before, only one playable character was available, but there’s a surprising game that actually could have impacted the developers—it's Grand Theft Auto IV, and specifically, one of the most important missions in the game—Three Leaf Clover.
During the mission, Nico Bellic, alongside Michael, Derrick, and Packie, is planning to rob a bank, and it was the place where the storylines of Nico Bellic, Johnny Klebits, and Luis Lopes (the main characters of Grand Theft Auto IV: Episodes from Liberty City) were crossed together for the first time. And, as it turned out, this mission was actually an inspiration for the mechanic of robberies that we saw in Grand Theft Auto V and possibly in Grand Theft Auto VI, where the main heroes are uniting with secondary characters. It was revealed by former audio engineer of Rockstar Games, Rob Carr, who worked on such projects as Grand Theft Auto IV, Grand Theft Auto V, Red Dead Redemption, L.A. Noire, and Red Dead Redemption 2. He confirmed that during the latest podcast with Reece “Kiwi Talkz” Reilley, and you can check out the highlights below:
“All three characters connect in the middle. Retrospectively, looking back now, it’s easy to see how that’s the blueprint of the three-player system in GTA 5. Only when you look back at that are you like, ‘oh, yeah. It’s actually really quite obvious. ’ That’s one mission where three storylines meet in the middle.”
“There will be things that they have in GTA 5 that they will have in GTA 6 that you will look at and go, ‘ugh, we should have seen that coming. Oh, that’s really clever. There are things they did in GTA 5 that they will definitely want to expand on and use as either a core mechanic or a main plot point or something in GTA 6. I’d be incredibly surprised if they don’t do anything like that.”
It will be curious to see how Rockstar Games will improve the mechanic of two protagonists in Grand Theft Auto VI, and especially how this will fit in the game’s story. What we saw in Grand Theft Auto V was truly exciting, and according to Rob Carr, it could be even better in the sixth installment.
