Ubisoft Says Prince of Persia Remake Is “Very Soon” but Splinter Cell Still Missing
Ubisoft has finally said something new about Prince of Persia: The Sands of Time Remake—and for once, it doesn’t sound like a delay. During the company’s recent annual general meeting, Ubisoft CFO Frederick Duguet stated that the long-postponed remake is coming “very soon.” That phrase is doing a lot of work considering the project was first leaked five years ago, but it’s the clearest signal yet that the game might actually see daylight.
Ubisoft’s AGM isn’t typically the place where release dates get dropped, but this time, fans got a small reward. Duguet was answering a question about Tencent’s investment in Ubisoft and where the money would go. As part of his response, he brought up some of the publisher’s classic IPs that can be “reactivated with little investment.” One of those names was Prince of Persia.
“This goes to the remake of Prince of Persia: The Sands of Time, which is going to be released very soon, or even Splinter Cell later on,” Duguet said.
It’s not a hard date, but it’s at least something after years of missed windows, restarts, and radio silence. The most recent public release window for the Sands of Time Remake is sometime before March 31, 2026 —Ubisoft’s current fiscal year-end. That gives the studio about eight months. “Very soon” might be a stretch, but considering how far this project has already been delayed, anything in 2025 counts as soon at this point.
The remake’s development has been a mess since it first leaked through a Russian Uplay store in 2020. Originally planned for a 2021 release, the game was built at Ubisoft Pune and Ubisoft Mumbai. Fan reaction to the early trailer wasn’t great, prompting delays. Then Ubisoft shifted development to Ubisoft Montréal in 2022, where the game underwent what the studio called “a full reboot.” Social media updates stopped. At one point, a Ubisoft Twitter account mistakenly promoted the original Sands of Time instead of the remake, forcing the company to reassure fans that yes, the remake is still happening.
Now, five years after that initial leak, Ubisoft is back to promising progress. There’s still no trailer, gameplay footage, or new screenshots, but “very soon” could suggest something will show up before the 2025 holiday season. If Ubisoft wants a hit title to headline its next financial quarter, a late-year release would make sense.
Ubisoft also shared its latest financials, reporting €400 million in net bookings for Q1 2025 and announcing strong performance for Assassin’s Creed: Shadows. The publisher said it plans to “selectively invest” in reviving classic IPs while continuing to support its live service games. The Sands of Time Remake clearly fits that plan, though whether it launches before Skull and Bones 2 is anyone’s guess.
Then there’s Splinter Cell. It’s now been four years since Ubisoft announced a remake of the original Splinter Cell game, and fans still haven’t seen anything concrete. That project has managed to go even quieter than Sands of Time, despite being one of Ubisoft’s most requested revivals. Duguet name-dropped it alongside Prince of Persia, but there was no timeline or real update—just the vague hint that it still exists.
The last time Splinter Cell appeared in any meaningful way was in crossovers. Sam Fisher popped up in mobile games and Rainbow Six Siege, often with mismatched visuals or short appearances that felt more like reminders that Ubisoft hasn’t totally forgotten him. Last year, Ubisoft even posted a 10-year anniversary post featuring the wrong picture of Sam Fisher, a moment so off-brand it had fans wondering if the studio was deliberately trolling.
That kind of communication has been a theme. Ubisoft has promised big things and delivered delays more often than not. Games like Skull and Bones, Beyond Good & Evil 2, and now Splinter Cell have become running jokes in the industry for how long they’ve been in development limbo. Prince of Persia seemed to be headed down that road, too, until now.
The question is whether this latest statement is real momentum or just another PR placeholder. Ubisoft has a busy lineup going into 2026. There’s Star Wars Outlaws, the Assassin’s Creed slate, and new live service content across its franchises. Adding Prince of Persia back to the mix would help balance the portfolio with something single-player and nostalgia-driven. If it lands before March 2026, that’s already a win.
As for Splinter Cell, there’s still nothing to hold onto. Duguet’s vague mention doesn’t guarantee anything’s coming soon, and given the lack of updates or materials, it's unlikely the game will show up in the next year. That remake could still be early in development—or, based on past Ubisoft history, quietly shelved.
For now, Prince of Persia: The Sands of Time Remake is still alive, and the company swears it’s coming soon. The game might not be the blockbuster Ubisoft once imagined, but its eventual release could finally close the loop on one of the publisher’s longest-running sagas of delays and reboots. Just don’t hold your breath for Sam Fisher.
