Rockstar Removed the "Icon" Mechanic in GTA 6 Related to Weapons and Parachutes

Based on everything we know so far, GTA 6 looks set to be not just Rockstar's most ambitious project but its most realistic one too. That's backed up by both what the developers themselves have revealed and what media figures who have gotten hands-on time with a demo have shared.

In a new YouTube video, TGG explained that Rockstar has done away with the traditional "icon" mechanic for certain in-game items in GTA 6, specifically weapons, and singled out parachutes as one example. In previous games, including GTA V, parachutes could be picked up around the map and would auto-deploy whenever a character fell from a certain height. As for GTA 6, though, the parachute becomes a fully physical item you'll actually have to equip and use at the right moment, and knowing Rockstar's attention to detail, there's a real chance it might not always open successfully either.

In GTA 6, the parachute is no longer a floating icon like in previous titles that you can just walk over and take.

It’s now an actual object you find resting realistically on the ground of a helipad and you have to physically pick it up and wear it.

Weapons and other items will also be physical objects not just icons, and you’ll be able to drop them or even walk up to the other character and hand them directly.

It's a small detail, but it's another piece of the larger picture around just how realistic GTA 6 is shaping up to be, and it fits the pattern of the studio polishing nearly every aspect of the game. Plenty of people already see this as one of the reasons GTA 6 could end up being 2026's best game. Polygon has gone as far as calling it a near-certainty, arguing Rockstar has essentially no serious competition this year, despite a strong lineup that already includes Resident Evil Requiem and 007 First Light, with Control Resonant, Marvel's Wolverine, and The Legend of Zelda: Ocarina of Time still to come. The latter having just gotten its first footage and a November 5 release date at the recent Nintendo Direct.

For now, you can also find out everything we know about GTA 6 so far—the story, gameplay, map, open world, platforms, and more - as well as how GTA 6 is reshaping the 2026 game calendar and everything about GTA 6 pre-order details: price, bonuses, exact time, and Ultimate Edition.
