New FromSoftware Game “FMC” in the Works, Launch Could Be Next Year

FromSoftware is working on a new game that could be out as soon as 2026, and no, it’s not The Duskbloods. According to a report from mp1st, this mystery title is currently being developed under the codename “FMC” and is confirmed to be a multiplatform release. That instantly rules out any connection to The Duskbloods, which will be exclusive to the upcoming Nintendo Switch 2.

The information comes from sources close to the studio. mp1st says the nature of their source suggests the project is already in an advanced development stage. That would mean FromSoftware has been working on this behind the scenes for a while and could be gearing up for a reveal or release window soon.

The codename "FMC" might also be a clue. Fans of FromSoftware will recognize that past codenames have often hinted at the franchise. Dark Souls 3 was known as FDP internally, Dark Souls Remastered was FHD, and Armored Core 6 was FNR. This led to speculation that FMC might belong to either the Dark Souls or Armored Core family. These aren’t just random letters—they’ve loosely followed a pattern, especially when the first letter “F” is involved.

FromSoftware’s catalog has grown into a lineup that defines entire genres. Starting with the King’s Field series in the late '90s, the studio broke through with Demon’s Souls in 2009, which laid the foundation for what would become known as the "Soulslike" genre. Dark Souls (2011), Dark Souls 2 (2014), and Dark Souls 3 (2016) took that formula to the next level. Then came Bloodborne (2015), a faster and more aggressive twist on the genre, and Sekiro: Shadows Die Twice (2019), which traded RPG elements for tight swordplay and parrying.

Their most recent fantasy title, Elden Ring (2022), brought the studio to its peak popularity. A massive open world co-developed with Game of Thrones writer George R. R. Martin, Elden Ring sold over 25 million copies. This year, it got a new expansion: Shadow of the Erdtree, and its multiplayer-focused update Nightreign. While those showed FromSoftware expanding its systems, director Hidetaka Miyazaki has stated that the studio is not pivoting to live service or multiplayer-first games.

Then there’s Armored Core 6: Fires of Rubicon (2023), a reboot of FromSoftware’s older mecha combat series. It turned out to be a commercial and critical success, selling 3 million units in under a year. It’s no surprise that many now believe FMC could be a direct sequel or spin-off from that world, especially with the “F” codename pattern matching previous Armored Core projects.

At the same time, some rumors are circling about a potential Dark Souls 3 Remastered. Nick “Shpeshal Nick” Baker from the XboxEra podcast reported last year that such a remaster might be in development. However, that would be a surprising move. Miyazaki has previously described Dark Souls 3 as the "big closure" on the series. Then again, a remaster isn't a new game—it’s a technical refresh—and could fit into the timeline without clashing with that statement.

“When you retire, you want to stop doing your horrible job and go do what is most fun and entertaining. In that sense, I've been retired for a long time.” —Hidetaka Miyazaki, on creative freedom in recent interviews.

Now, circling back to The Duskbloods, it’s confirmed that this vampire-themed action game is not FMC. Unveiled during a recent Nintendo Direct, The Duskbloods is being built for Switch 2 and features an over-the-top setting with jetpacks, blood powers, and dinosaurs. Its look and gameplay loop suggest something more experimental than traditional Souls games, possibly aiming to showcase the next Nintendo console’s hardware while offering a different kind of FromSoftware experience. It’s expected to launch alongside or shortly after the Switch 2 drops in 2026.

The Duskbloods being console-exclusive and FMC being multiplatform gives FromSoftware the room to serve two very different audiences—one focused on a new IP for handheld gaming, and one possibly revisiting its darker, more traditional titles for PC, PlayStation, and Xbox.

There’s no confirmed connection between FMC and any franchise yet, but the timing lines up. FromSoftware tends to keep tight development schedules. Elden Ring came out in 2022, and while expansions take resources, the studio has grown significantly in the last five years. It's not impossible for another team inside the company to have quietly worked on a new game in parallel.

What is known: FMC is not The Duskbloods, it’s not Switch-only, and it’s probably coming out next year. Whether it ends up being a return to Lordran, a mech battle sequel, or something completely new, FromSoftware isn’t slowing down anytime soon.
