Mortal Kombat II Almost Included Tremor and Two Post-Credit Scenes
Last week saw the premiere of Mortal Kombat II, the long-awaited sequel of 2021. And even in just a few days, Simon McQuaid's film managed to attract the attention of viewers.
It is reported that, at the moment, the box office earnings of Mortal Kombat II amount to about 63 million dollars, of which 40 million were earned in the first weekend in the United States and Canada, breaking the record of all previous films in the franchise. The film also received decent reviews - 65% freshness on Rotten Tomatoes (the original film has 55%) and a user rating of 7.4 on Metacritic.
As is often the case in modern Hollywood, many scenes for various reasons end up being cut and do not make it into the final film, and Mortal Kombat II is no exception. In a recent interview with ComicBook, the film's screenwriter Jeremy Slater confirmed that he wrote two post-credits scenes for Mortal Kombat II, but due to a limited budget, they were never filmed. Unfortunately, he did not reveal the content of these scenes but hinted they set up events for the third installment. In another interview, in a conversation with GamesRadar+, Slater also mentioned that initially Tremor was supposed to fight Sonya Blade, not Sindel, but the character's appearance was inappropriate. More detailed information about the cut post-credits scenes and the appearance of Tremor from Jeremy Slater you can check out below:
“I wrote a couple of different post-credit scenes, and we just never wound up filming any of them. This movie is huge and expansive and beautiful, and the special effects are awesome, but we didn’t have an unlimited budget, you know, we didn’t have, we weren’t able to sort of write those Avengers checks for anything you can imagine we can go shoot. So we had to be very surgical and very targeted in what was actually going on in front of the cameras, and where are we gonna get the most bang for our buck.
So we had some stuff that was potential post-credit sequences. And candidly, they just didn’t justify the money that we were going to spend on them, and also the ideas of what 3 was actually going to be about kept changing. So we kind of got a little worried that we were definitely planting a flag and saying, ‘this is the plot for 3 that is now being set up in this post-credit sequence,’ versus, ‘let’s take a step back and let’s make sure we’re telling the right story. And, and thank God, because if we had had to decide, you know, two years ago, what the plot of 3 is, it was something very different from the script that I’m writing right now. So, we would have probably made one of those promises that then would have boxed us into a corner.
You know, we almost had Tremor in the movie at one point for the Sonya fight, just because I've always liked Tremor and he's got really fun, really cool powers. We realized we had Sindel already on the table, and she wasn't being used in an exciting enough way, so it was one of those smack my own forehead moments of like, Tremor wasn't working because I wasn't able to devote enough time to sort of sell him as a character. Once we swapped out Sindel, it immediately became more visceral, and there's just more skin in the game. And Sindel's powers were so much fun that it felt like she belonged in that pit of spikes in a way that never felt right with Tremor.”
Speaking of Mortal Kombat III, the movie is confirmed to be happening, as earlier this year Jeremy Slater finished its script. The story details of the movie are currently unknown, but Mortal Kombat II definitely lays the foundation for a trilogy in various ways. There were rumors that the third film might adapt the events of the video game Mortal Kombat 3, and Ed Boon even stated that we could potentially see more than 10 films based on the iconic fighting franchise.
