Early Footage Confirms Resident Evil 9 Was a Co-Op Online Game at Some Point

One of the best features of Resident Evil Requiem, Capcom’s latest installment and one of the best games of 2026 so far, is that players are able to play for two different characters, and it literally feels like two separate games. Playing for Grace Ashcroft reminds a survival horror, while Leon S. Kennedy is all surrounded by action scenes.

However, initially it was a much more different game. Last November, Resident Evil Requiem producer Masato Kumazawa revealed Capcom wanted the ninth installment to be “an open-world multiplayer entry,” and now some footage of an early version of the game has been unveiled. We can see a co-op mode in action and the comments from Kumazama that tell us the studio decided to make Requiem as a co-op multiplayer title because it was “not what the fans would want to play.” You can check the highlights of the early Resident Evil 9 game below:

“Resident Evil 9 was originally meant to be an action-oriented co op

Here’s actual footage of what RE9 initially was!”

It seems like turning co-op online Resident Evil 9 into Resident Evil Requiem could be one of the best decisions Capcom ever made. The game has already broken the record as the fastest-selling title in the history of the franchise by selling 5 million copies in 5 days, and the game currently has the highest ever user score by Metacritic —9.5.

Capcom is reportedly already working on a DLC to Requiem, with Leon S. Kennedy as the lead character. Also, the studio is actively developing Resident Evil 10, according to the latest report of game series insider Dusk Golem.
