Resident Evil Requiem Could Have Been a Multiplayer Game
Resident Evil Requiem will tell the story of a new character named Grace Ashcroft. She will investigate a mysterious death at the Wrenwood Hotel - the same place where her mother, Alyssa Ashcroft, died. It is also important to say that Alyssa appeared in Resident Evil Outbreak and could appear in the game not only as fictional character, but in DLC as well.
However, it's been revealed that Resident Evil Requiem could have been much different game that we have right now. According to the game's producer Masato Kumazawa, Capcom initially planned to make Resident Evil 9 "an open-ended multiplayer entry". During the interview with Press Start Australia he revealed that they were working on the game around six years but they decided to scrap all multiplayer features because "it didn't feel like Resident Evil". Some of his words from the interview you can see below:
"We looked deeply into this game and wondered if a fan of the franchise would really like this, so we thought they would probably wouldn't enjoy it as much. That's the reason we made it back into single player. But because it was fun, we added elements from that build to the final game to ensure it was fun. I believe fans of the franchise want survival horror and being scared, that's what they want. So we can't just slap on new skins, new characters and give you the same experience. It wouldn't be that good"
Considering the level of anticipation regarding Resident Evil Requiem, it seems like it was a right decision to make the game singleplayer instead of multiplayer. We will see if our expectations be met on February 27, 2026 when Resident Evil Requiem releases for PC, PlayStation 5 and Xbox Series X/S.
