Overwatch 2 Bans 1M Cheaters & Introduces Major Controller and Chat Updates

Blizzard has intensified its crackdown in Overwatch 2, revealing that over 1,000,000 cheaters have been banned since launch. Alongside these actions, the studio is rolling out sweeping updates for both input detection and chat moderation to protect competitive integrity.

🚫 Over 1 Million Cheaters Banned

In a developer blog on August 29, Blizzard confirmed that more than 1,000,000 accounts were permanently removed for using exploits such as aimbots and wall hacks.

The fight against cheaters isn’t limited to PC. Ever since the studio began targeting console players using third-party adapters to gain unfair advantages, Blizzard has already taken action over 23,000 times.

Still, as Blizzard noted, cheaters are constantly adapting:

“We’ve seen a need to adapt to new workarounds and we’re now ready to take more aggressive actions against those who try to circumvent the competitive integrity of our console players.”

🎮 Controller vs. Mouse & Keyboard Pools

To ensure fair matchmaking, Season 18 introduced new input-based pools:

  • Controller Pool (formerly Console Pool)
  • Mouse & Keyboard Pool (formerly PC Pool)

🔹 Console players using mouse & keyboard will now be forced into the Mouse & Keyboard Pool, where aim assist is completely disabled. If they refuse to switch, their inputs won’t function in matches—though text chat will still work.

🔹 PC players using controllers remain in the PC pool “for competitive integrity reasons,” ensuring SR and matchmaking stay consistent across platforms.

💬 Real-Time Text Moderation in Chat

Blizzard is also introducing “Real-Time Text Moderation” to Overwatch 2. This system, previously used in World of Warcraft, automatically filters offensive messages before they appear in the chat lobby.

  • Flagged messages are hidden by default, though players can choose to reveal and report them.
  • Turning the filter off does not exempt players from penalties—ranging from chat mutes to permanent bans.

This change may stir controversy, as Overwatch has a history of questionable bans—including players penalized for typing simple phrases like “noob,” “GG,” or “nice shot.”

🔎 The Road Ahead

With Season 18 in full swing, Blizzard is betting heavily on these updates to strengthen fair play and reduce toxicity. Whether the community embraces these changes—or finds new ways to test the limits—remains to be seen.
