Xbox Reportedly Plans Major Mobile Gaming Push With Sea of Thieves

Microsoft-owned Xbox may be preparing a major push into mobile gaming as the company looks for new growth opportunities beyond its traditional console business. Following years of leadership changes, studio closures, layoffs, and challenges surrounding Xbox Game Pass, reports suggest the company is exploring native mobile ports of some of its existing titles.

According to information shared by HTD_Blog, a former GameBattles journalist who has previously reported on Activision-related developments, Microsoft is evaluating how its less demanding games could perform on mobile devices.

Sea of Thieves Could Lead Xbox’s Mobile Expansion

The reported strategy focuses on games that are less technically demanding, allowing Xbox to deliver better-optimized mobile experiences while keeping development costs manageable. The first title being considered for this initiative is reportedly Sea of Thieves.

If the game performs well on mobile platforms, Microsoft may expand the program and bring additional legacy Xbox titles to Android devices in the future.

The report also claims that Sea of Thieves is being developed not only for Android but also for the upcoming Nintendo Switch 2.

Native Android Version Reportedly in Development

Unlike Xbox Cloud Gaming, the Android version is said to be a fully native port rather than a streaming-based experience. While touch controls may be supported, players are reportedly expected to have the best experience using a controller.

At the moment, there are no plans for an iOS version, according to the report.

Meanwhile, the Nintendo Switch 2 edition is expected to launch as a digital-only release.

Launch Window Targeted for 2027

According to the leak, Xbox is targeting Q1 2027 for the release of its first mobile port. The launch is reportedly planned as a surprise "shadow drop" rather than a traditionally announced release.

Should Sea of Thieves find success on Android, Microsoft may accelerate plans to bring more older Xbox titles to mobile platforms.
