The Last of Us wrapped up Season 2 with 3.7 million viewers on premiere day
The final episode of the new season of The Last of Us was watched by 55% fewer viewers in its first 24 hours compared to the Season 1 finale. Specifically, the Season 2 finale drew 3.7 million viewers on its first day, while the final episode of Season 1 attracted 8.2 million.
According to The Wrap, the drop in viewership may not be due to the episode’s quality, but rather its release during the holiday period — a time when most shows typically see a ratings dip. The platform expects the finale's viewership to grow throughout the workweek.
Since the release of the first season's finale, the series has been watched by 90 million viewers overall. Each episode of Season 2 has averaged around 37 million viewers worldwide.
The show has already been renewed for a third season. Additionally, showrunner Craig Mazin has confirmed there will be more than three seasons, as the story is too rich and complex to fit into just three.
It was previously reported that the Season 2 finale received a 7.4 rating on IMDb — lower than the Season 1 finale. The highest-rated episodes of the season were the second and sixth, with scores of 9.3 and 8.7 respectively.
