For the first time in the series, the characters will be fully voice-acted, and the original soundtrack has been completely rearranged for a more immersive experience.

Several quality-of-life improvements are also on the way, including a new save system, auto-battle, faster combat speed, and enemy weakness indicators — all designed to make gameplay smoother and more enjoyable.

Square Enix has also prepared bonuses for longtime fans. Players with save data from Dragon Quest III HD-2D Remake will receive exclusive costumes — a dog outfit for DQI and a cat outfit for DQII. Pre-ordering the game will grant players a set of in-game items to aid them on their journey.

Dragon Quest I & II HD-2D Remake will launch on PlayStation 5, Xbox Series X/S, Nintendo Switch, Switch 2, and PC, priced at $60.

And for those unfamiliar with this legend of Japanese game development — a quick history lesson. The original Dragon Quest was released back in 1986 and is considered the grandfather of Japanese role-playing games. It laid the foundation for the JRPG genre, inspiring countless titles and generations of developers. Now, nearly 40 years later, it’s returning in a brand-new format. Veterans will get emotional, and newcomers will finally feel the magic of classic gameplay with a modern twist.
