Valheim 1.0 Got Inventory Increase Option Finally

The ability to increase your inventory has finally arrived in Valheim's final 1.0 update, which also brought a new biome and plenty of other content. Now players can gain 16 additional slots, and we'll show you how below.

As a reminder, the inventory itself has stayed unchanged from early access all the way to the 1.0 release, totaling 32 slots. 8 of these are hotbar slots, and 24 are backpack slots. That small number is exactly where the main problem lies. The first 8 slots are usually taken up by weapons, food, and frequently used tools, while the 24 inventory slots fill up far too quickly with useful resources and junk. That's why players have long asked the developers to add a way to expand the inventory, and now it has finally happened.

With the release of Valheim 1.0, the developers added the ability to increase your number of slots by buying the Wider Pockets and Deeper Pockets upgrades from the merchant Haldor, each of which gives +8 slots to your inventory. You can find him randomly in the Black Forest biome. His camp is protected by a barrier, so you won't run into any enemies there.

However, you can't buy them right away only after reaching a certain stage in the game. Both items are tied to boss kills, so Haldor won't show them in his stock until the corresponding boss has been defeated in that particular world.

  • Wider Pockets appears after Moder falls in the Mountains, priced at 1000
  • Deeper Pockets becomes available after defeating The Queen in the Mistlands, priced at 2000

If you purchase both additional upgrades, you'll get +16 slots in your inventory.

While these upgrades are very useful, they won't be available during the early and mid stages of the game, as long as neither boss has been killed yet. So during that period, we recommend focusing not on the number of slots, but on carry weight. The Megingjord belt, which you can buy from the same merchant for 950 coins, increases your maximum carry weight by 150 kg. And while your number of slots stays the same, you'll be able to carry more weight, and therefore a larger amount of the items you already have.

Also, after killing Moder, you'll not only be able to buy the extra slots, but also use her Moder's Power skill, which additionally adds 300 kg of carry weight for five minutes. For more tips on tackling bosses and other early progression steps, check out our Valheim 1.0 guide hub.
