Mystery Unraveled: The Buzz Around Far Cry 7's Cryptic Teaser and What It Really Means
A prominent Ubisoft leaker recently sparked a flurry of speculation with a mysterious tweet that led some to believe Far Cry 7 might feature actor Cillian Murphy. However, this notion was quickly debunked by the leaker himself, although the teaser still managed to ignite considerable discussion among fans.
After a brief hiatus following the somewhat tepid reception of Far Cry 6 in 2021, Ubisoft Toronto hinted at the development of a new entry in the Far Cry series in August 2023 by starting recruitment for a related project. About eight months later, the known Ubisoft leaker and YouTuber, j0nathan, posted a cryptic message on Twitter. His tweet included a picture of Cillian Murphy, a bomb set to a 72-hour timer, concept art of a giant crab, and the number seven, accompanied by the phrase, "If nothing changes by then." While the cryptic nature of the tweet frustrated some fans, it encouraged others to engage in lively speculation. The post quickly circulated online, leading to theories that Far Cry 7 would feature Murphy, possibly as a villain.
However, these rumors were swiftly addressed by j0nathan who clarified on April 21 that he had never claimed Murphy would appear in the game, suggesting the image represented something different. One theory proposed by fans, influenced by Murphy's recent role in Oppenheimer, is that the teaser could hint at nuclear themes in the upcoming game—a theme not new to the Far Cry series.
Further speculation by a Twitter user suggested that the bomb image might relate to a gameplay mechanic in Far Cry 7, where players are given 72 in-game hours to complete their mission. J0nathan responded to this theory with "Getting hotter," indicating a closer guess.
The origin of the crab artwork in the tweet, titled "King Of The Cliffs" by Italian concept artist Luigi Giordano, adds another layer of mystery. With no direct ties between Giordano and Ubisoft, it suggests that the relevance of the image to Far Cry 7 lies in its subject rather than its creator.
