Far Cry Extraction Shooter Is Cancelled With Ubisoft Changing the Franchise’s Course

Even though there's still been no official announcement from Ubisoft on this, the Far Cry franchise is apparently in for some significant changes. Insider Tom Henderson has confirmed the studio has started work on a new, ambitious project while at the same time canceling a game many fans considered a fairly risky bet.

Beyond confirming that new game, Henderson also shared a few other exclusive details in the latest Insider Gaming report. Perhaps the biggest one is that Ubisoft has canceled an extraction shooter set in the Far Cry universe, known as Project Maverick, reportedly meant to be a standalone title releasing alongside the seventh installment (Project Blackbird). Speaking of the latter, development on Far Cry 7, set in Alaska, is still moving forward, and Henderson adds it's been stabilized after the earlier issues. Far Cry 7 may also include some multiplayer elements—like exploring the map with several players at once—while the franchise's new ambitious project, Project Kodiak, will build on the work already done for the canceled extraction shooter. It's expected to be an open-world game where “player interactions and player-driven stories take center stage.”

Honestly, canceling the Far Cry extraction shooter seems like the right move, given Ubisoft's track record with multiplayer spin-offs of its single-player franchises (and titles) hasn't always been great. It is also a good sign for future Far Cry entries staying true to what the series does best—story, open-world design, and gameplay innovation.

As we know, the Far Cry TV series is also in development for FX. Noah Hawley (Alien: Earth) is heading the project, and Reservoir Dogs star Steve Buscemi recently joined the cast alongside Rob Mac and Lizzy Caplan. However, the show will not adapt any franchise video games; instead, it will tell an original story.

Far Cry 7 is not officially announced by Ubisoft and is rumored to release somewhere in 2028 for PC, Xbox Series X/S, and PlayStation 5.
