Mortal Kombat II Became the Highest-Grossing Film in the Franchise—but Also a Flop for Warner Bros.
Released last month, Mortal Kombat II delivered a decent adaptation of the iconic franchise, introducing new characters familiar from the video games, and overall received praise from both audiences and fans. Naturally, film critics weren’t thrilled, which was quite expected. Moreover, like its predecessor from 2021, the movie underperformed at the box office.
According to updated data from Box Office Mojo, more than a month after its premiere, Mortal Kombat II has grossed $120 million worldwide—a figure that isn’t particularly impressive given the film’s $80 million budget. Nevertheless, the movie has become the highest-grossing installment in the series, surpassing the original 1995 film, which earned $122.2 million at the global box office without adjusting for inflation.
Mortal Kombat II is now available for digital viewing, and fans are concerned about how the film's financial performance might affect the future of the movie universe. As you may know, the script for Mortal Kombat III has already been completed, although the film has yet to enter production. The events in the second installment clearly tease what to expect from the sequel. Moreover, the franchise creator Ed Boon has suggested that, given the right circumstances, there could be around ten Mortal Kombat movies, including the much-anticipated spin-offs like Shaolin Monks and a standalone film focused on Sub-Zero—a project recently discussed, confirmed by the character's actor, Joe Taslim.
