Viridian Matters Launches Panline to Capture Mirror's Edge Magic
Mirror's Edge is known for being extremely cool. Mirror's Edge is known for not getting any new games. Indie developer Viridian Matters has said enough is enough. Viridian Matters announced a full-on Mirror's Edge-like game of their own. Panline serves as the name of that game. Panline has a Steam store page. The Steam page shows off brief snippets and screenshots. Panline looks the part. Streaks of color splash over each environment. Hues of bright blue cover some streaks. Hues of orange cover other streaks. Hues of algae green cover more streaks. Panline takes place in a gleaming dystopia full of spotless white skyscrapers.
The first screenshot on the Steam page features an in-game gadget. The in-game gadget looks an awful lot like one of Sony's gaming handhelds from the era. Brief gifs of gameplay footage show the parkour. The parkour oozes enthusiasm for DICE's platformer. Players can wall-run. Players build up speed. Players crash through doors. The non-linear open city gets navigated through jobs. Jobs show up dynamically. Players unlock new movement abilities. Players access new areas. Players upgrade their not-a-PSP. Lethal falls wipe progress for that job. What you carry is what you risk. Progress only counts once you make it back to base. Panline is slated to be released sometime this year. Precious little footage exists. The developer's only other game on Steam has a Very Positive review rating. The game wears its love for the late aughts on its sleeve.
I see how Panline captures the essence of the original through its parkour and design.

I think there are chances to become the spiritual successor to Mirror's Edge only if, besides parkour and successful design, there will be a character with character, and even better a female character. No, I am not hinting at anything.
The gadget resembles a PlayStation Portable. The gadget is shown in the first screenshot. The steam page highlights the gadget. The parkour features wall-run. The parkour features speed building. The parkour features door crashing. The city is non-linear. The city is open. Jobs show up dynamically. Movement abilities unlock. Areas open up. The not-a-PSP upgrades. Falls wipe progress. Items carry risk. Base secures progress. Release happens this year. Footage is precious little. The other game has positive reviews. The announcement came from the developer.
The game returns to the late aughts. The dystopia gleams with skyscrapers. Colors splash in multiple hues. The gadget looks like a handheld. Parkour gifs display movement. Wall runs allow speed. Doors break during runs. Jobs appear for navigation. Abilities open new paths. Upgrades improve the device. Falls reset the job. Risk involves carrying items. Return to base locks in gains.
