The Lord of the Rings: Gollum Faces New Controversy Amid Allegations of Troubled Development
The highly criticized video game, The Lord of the Rings: Gollum, has found itself embroiled in fresh controversy with disturbing allegations surfacing about the development team at Daedalic Entertainment. This latest report adds to a growing list of issues surrounding the creation and release of the game.
Initially announced in March 2019, The Lord of the Rings: Gollum encountered multiple delays before finally hitting the shelves in May 2023. Unfortunately, it was met with harsh reviews and failed to meet sales expectations set by the publisher. Much of the blame for these shortcomings seems to lie in behind-the-scenes problems and concerning behavior exhibited by those overseeing the project.
A recent video by the German publication, Game Two, features insights from over 32 individuals who worked on the game, shedding light on the internal troubles. These problems ranged from unpaid overtime, attempts to pay below minimum wage, and a toxic work environment fostered by poor leadership. Shockingly, the development of the game reportedly cost just under $16 million, and one developer likened the atmosphere to "an atmosphere of fear". Additionally, the report unveiled that The Lord of the Rings: Gollum's apology had been written using ChatGPT without the knowledge or consent of the development team.
Moreover, sources at other publications, including IGN, have corroborated these accounts, indicating that Daedalic's toxic practices were widely known within the German gaming industry. Although the publisher issued a denial in Game Two's video, the repercussions of the game's performance and alleged mismanagement are already evident. In May 2023, it was disclosed that Gollum's developer was working on another Lord of the Rings game, but development on this unnamed project has since been halted, likely due to Gollum's unfavorable reception.
Furthermore, in June 2023, Daedalic Entertainment announced it would cease game development activities after laying off several team members. While the studio remains operational in a publishing capacity, the long-term impact of these allegations on the company's future remains uncertain.
