Enhancing Ship Building in Starfield: Modders Making Their Mark
Even before its official release, Starfield has already achieved significant success, and a significant part of its appeal lies in its support for mods. While the list of available mods for Starfield may not be as extensive as that of other games, it is rapidly expanding, indicating a promising future for the modding community.
The excitement for Starfield's mod support began when Todd Howard announced it in 2021. This announcement was particularly thrilling for players familiar with Bethesda's history of games featuring high levels of customization, with Skyrim being a prime example. Given that Starfield draws much inspiration from Skyrim, modders have substantial potential to craft entirely new planets, each with its unique characteristics. Players have only scratched the surface of this potential, as evidenced by the remarkable number of mod downloads that have already occurred.
One modder, known as keanuWheeze, has introduced a mod called "Ship Builder Tweaks", which significantly enhances Starfield's ship-building experience. This mod, available on Nexus Mods and boasting over 5,000 downloads, focuses on improving the controls and overall user experience within the Starfield ship builder. Ship Builder Tweaks enables players to zoom in and out more efficiently, pan and rotate at higher speeds, reduce snapping distances, and even add additional floors to their ships. Installing this mod is a straightforward process, with clear instructions provided. Starfield players can now customize their ships by acquiring parts through various means, such as purchasing with credits, saving pilots, or engaging in ship-to-ship combat. With the acquired components, players can assemble Starfield ships tailored to their specific needs and preferences.
While Ship Builder Tweaks is a standout mod, it is far from the only one available to enhance the Starfield experience. Another noteworthy mod is the addition of DLSS (Deep Learning Super Sampling) to Starfield, compensating for the absence of NVIDIA's official technology in the game. Nexus Mods hosts an array of mods designed to modify Starfield players' inventory systems, revamp the HUD, and even expedite the process of skipping intro screens. As time goes on, it is expected that more performance and resource-focused mods will emerge for Starfield, mirroring the quality-of-life mods that have enriched the Skyrim experience.
The arrival of Starfield maintains the momentum of a year filled with highly anticipated RPG releases, including Baldur's Gate 3, Diablo 4 and Final Fantasy 16. For Bethesda, Starfield represents an opportunity to redefine how the studio approaches open-world game design. In terms of gameplay, Starfield aims to push the boundaries of the RPG genre, setting itself apart from conventional role-playing games and elevating the standards for space-themed RPGs and games as a whole.
