Pearl Abyss Teases How the Upcoming DLC for Crimson Desert Might Change the Game

After some rumors and teasers, Pearl Abyss has confirmed they are working on DLC for Crimson Desert. However, fans are still uncertain about what it will be like and what to expect. Nonetheless, in a recent interview, studio representatives hinted that the expansion is definitely on the horizon, promising it will be something that could change the game.

During last week's Summer Game Fest in Los Angeles, IGN spoke with Will Powers, Pearl Abyss' director of marketing and PR. They discussed various topics related to Crimson Desert, including the game's nearly weekly updates, potential mod support, and its controversial story campaign. Naturally, the conversation also touched on DLC, and Powers’ response seems to have made players even more eager for news about the upcoming expansion. You can find the key highlights from his interview below:

“I think that remains to be seen about what direction we will take with our upcoming plans for that. But, you know, words are important. So let's be very clear about the difference between the words 'update,' 'DLC,' and 'expansion.' What we've called everything we've done and added to the game right now has been updates. We're calling this upcoming project a DLC, so this will be different from all the updates we've had after the game launched. So that's where I'll go with that. We're calling it something different, and there's a good reason why we're calling it a DLC.”

As for the latest update for Crimson Desert, Patch Notes 1.11.00 introduced the ability to register up to 100 pets, added the option to purchase lost loot, and fixed numerous technical issues. This week, Pearl Abyss also announced that total sales of Crimson Desert across all platforms have surpassed 6 million copies —an incredible achievement for the studio and a great motivation to continue releasing free content for the game. Additionally, the studio announced a unique competition for Crimson Desert called the Beyond the Abyss: Community Challenge Contest. The winners will have the opportunity to visit Pearl Abyss's headquarters in South Korea and receive exclusive rewards.

We should also keep in mind that Pearl Abyss is also working on their next title, DokeV, announced back in 2019. It's an open-world action-adventure video game featuring Dokebi—Korean folklore creatures that gain strength from people’s dreams and collide together on their adventures. The release date is currently unknown.
