PlayStation Lawsuit Details: Who Will Get Credits Back?
PlayStation actively supports the community by releasing new exclusives, as well as regularly updating and improving its services. However, even such global giants have flaws - for example, the case with accusations of a monopoly in the PS Store, which caused an extraordinary reaction among players.
In 2019, Sony forbade third-party stores from selling digital codes for PlayStation games, which has led to the outrage of players that titles are being sold at inflated prices. Since then, the situation has only worsened, as a lawsuit has been filed against the company, and all of this could end in a global change within the company's digital sales. Moreover, gamers still do not have a clear understanding regarding receiving monetary compensation.
Cases Against Sony in the US and in the UK
At the moment, there are two ongoing cases against Sony related to this - one in the United States and one in the United Kingdom—and there are some differences here. According to the latest information, in the U.S., Sony has preliminarily agreed to pay compensation of approximately $7.85 million for purchases made in the PS Store during the period from April 1, 2019, to December 31, 2023. The years 2024-2026 were not included in the agreement for several reasons, as the case was filed and formulated before the subsequent years were completed, while it will be easier for the court to assess an already completed period of sales and prices. Moreover, the settlement only covers the damage that was previously claimed in the lawsuit. At the same time, the company has not officially admitted its guilt but simply decided to go for a conflict settlement. Regarding compensation, it is expected that about 4.4 million PSN users in the US may receive payments, but gamers believe that the amount will be equal to a few dollars or even PSN credits. The final hearing is currently scheduled for October 15, and after that, the details of compensation payments and the further development of the situation regarding the sale of digital goods in the PlayStation Store will be known.
As for the case in the United Kingdom, the situation here is more interesting and potentially much more serious for Sony. The lawsuit has received a separate name - PlayStation You Owe Us—in which more than 12 million players are demanding compensation in the region of £2 billion. According to the accusations, Sony is abusing its control over digital stores, taking a 30% commission and not providing alternative options for games. Users are outraged because, in this case, they end up significantly overpaying for a game purchase. Unlike the case in the USA, PlayStation You Owe Us is still in court, and its outcome is currently unknown.
How Players Can Get Compensation

Since the court hearing will take place only on October 15, there is currently no official information on how players can actually receive compensation. However, most likely, after the decision is made, an official website will be launched where PSN users from the USA will be able to submit applications for compensation, providing the email linked to the service. Then, users will need to confirm that they made purchases through the PlayStation Store during the period from April 1, 2019, to December 31, 2023, and specify the method of receiving the refund.
In the case of the British lawsuit, the situation is also somewhat complicated, but most details remain unknown, as the case has not yet been concluded. It is stated that British players may receive compensation if they were residing in the United Kingdom on February 12, 2026 (this date was chosen by the court and lawyers to determine the participants of the class action), are residents of the country, and made purchases in the PS Store before this date. So far, there is no information about registration anywhere, and given the payout demands of £2 billion, the potential compensation may be around 100 pounds sterling - but this is yet to be determined.
