GTA 6 Needs to Sell 25 Million Copies On the Launch Day to Satisfy Take-Two’s Needs
With plenty of hype surrounding GTA 6—arguably, the most anticipated video game of 2026 and the most ambitious Rockstar Games title as well—it's not a surprise that Take-Two Interactive, the parent company of the gaming studio, is counting on high sales of the upcoming title. And, no doubt, it will happen: the question is, how big will they be?
Although we don’t know the price of GTA 6 yet, according to Bank of America, it should be $80 to “set a new financial standard for all new AAA titles in the gaming industry.” And even though the release is still about six months away, Take-Two CEO Strauss Zelnick recently revealed that expectations for GTA are "terrifying" given the fact that we still don’t know much (official details) about the game’s story, gameplay, open-world activities, and so on.
Meanwhile, the new report shows that GTA 6 will need to show some really decent results on the launch day to meet Take-Two’s expectations. Specifically, as revealed via Bloomberg, the company is counting on receiving at least 20-25 million sold copies, and it is said that selling 10 million copies, which is a superb result for any other big title, might be considered a disappointment for Grand Theft Auto VI.
“Some analysts have forecasted that the new Grand Theft Auto will sell upwards of 25 million units on day one. That means that selling 10 million units — a miraculous figure for most of Grand Theft Auto VI’s competitors — would be considered disastrous for this game.”
Considering the massive result of its predecessor, GTA 5, back in 2013, when the game grossed $800 million in its first 24 hours and reached $1 billion in three days, selling approximately 11–13 million copies of the game. It seems that GTA 6 has every chance of surpassing the fifth installment, given the hype surrounding the game right now, which will likely continue to grow as the release date approaches.
That is precisely why Rockstar Games is prioritizing the game’s console release, as Strauss Zelnick recently mentioned —especially when you consider how much revenue the studio generates from GTA Online on PlayStation and Xbox, which is significantly more than on PC.
At the same time, Rockstar Games is actively preparing for the start of GTA 6’s marketing campaign, as the studio has begun work on producing physical promotional materials for the game, including posters and billboards located in New York. We also know Take-Two Interactive confirmed their next financial earnings call on May 21, so the fans remain hopeful that the new trailer of GTA 6 will arrive soon enough.

The game will release on November 19 for PlayStation 5 and Xbox Series X/S.
