Darby McDevitt Will Serve as Black Flag Resynced Writer and More Game Details Revealed
After yesterday’s reveal of Assassin’s Creed Black Flag Resynced, a well-anticipated remake of 2013’s Assassin’s Creed IV: Black Flag, many gamers now consider Ubisoft’s latest entry as one of the most anticipated titles of 2026—and there are reasons why.
Besides revamped graphics, an improved rendering system, high-resolution textures, and greater detail in major cities and during underwater exploration, Black Flag Resynced offers a host of new features, including an expansion of Edward Kenway’s storyline and its interconnections with other characters. It’s also been revealed that Darby McDevitt, the writer of the original Assassin’s Creed IV: Black Flag, is returning for Black Flag Resynced. He was also a lead writer of Assassin’s Creed Revelations and wrote some dialogues as well as the story of Assassin’s Creed Unity—and the fans are happy he is coming back.
Not only that, but new details of Assassin’s Creed Black Flag Resynced have been revealed, and they reveal many aspects of the game—new story and side quests, ship combat, the Animus’ impact and modern-day storyline, and other gameplay features.
New content will include 6 hours of gameplay, with additional chapters and missions. Blackbeard and Stede Bonnet will get new story arcs, and there will be three new officers in Edward Kenway’s crew at Jackdaw: Lucy Baldwin, The Padre, and Deadman Smith. The pre-story of each character will be unveiled, and once they join you, you will get unique awards. For example, Deadman Smith unlocks a double shot from broadside weapons. We will also see new scenes featuring Edward Kenway and his wife, Caroline, to add more emotional drama to the story.
Speaking of the gameplay features, despite what we haven’t seen in the reveal trailer, the game’s Lead Producer Justin Ng confirms there will be blood in Black Flag Resynced, and it won’t be a paid DLC. Plus, he addressed the feedback on the VFX and audio cues during fights and promised it will be toned down.
“A few things to quickly address I guess (without getting into trouble hopefully)
There WILL be blood in the final game, and it will not be a paid DLC.
We hear the feedback on the VFX and audio cues on fight. It's being toned down.”
Jackdaw, Edward Kenway’s pirate ship, will be equipped with even more firepower, which will be useful during the travels across the Caribbean. Players will also receive new possibilities to upgrade the ship, making it an irresistible force. As for the modern-day storyline, it will be reworked, and in Assassin’s Creed Black Flag Resynced, you’ll be able to see rifts, which will include new moments focused on Edward Kenway’s mental struggle. It is expected that we might see some alternative stories where the character made different choices—including becoming a templar.
Assassin’s Creed Black Flag Resynced will also feature Kenway’s Fleet mode and a minigame where you can use captured ships to complete missions, gain resources, secure naval routes, and unlock upgrades for your ship, character, and crew.
At last, it was revealed that Woodkid is returning to produce a song dedicated to Black Flag Resynced, as he previously did with the 'Iron' song for Assassin’s Creed Revelation trailer—one of the best gaming trailers of all time. Ubisoft Singapore (Skull and Bones) is responsible for developing Black Flag Resynced, which totally makes sense, with other Ubisoft departments also involved (Barcelona, Bordeaux, Belgrade, and more).
